back among the elite faster than anyone in the majors—with the exception of Ted Williams. .Some baseball men credit the broken collarbone that kept Slaughter out of the lineup for five weeks last season as one.of the reasons for the Cards failure to win the flag. That line of reasoning is easy understand after a look at the Rm swinger’s eurrent swatting record.

Cards Gain on Dodgers

Slaughter broke loose on July 4/3:

with five hits in a double-header against the Cubs. His average at that time wes .279. Since then he’s collected a total of 75 hits for a period average of .391. games of that period, he went hitless only five times and increased his total average a full 37 points to 317. Slaughter collected a hit in two trips as Max Lanier _hurled “the Cards to a 5-0 shutout over the Cubs last night, helping to reduce the Dodgers league lead to 6% games. Lanier gave up seven hits, but did not allow a runner to get beyond second as his tates downed Claude Passeau, who gave up nine hits, for the first time this year. It was Lanier’s 10th victory. .The Phils toppled the Dodgers, 3-1, behind the seven-hit pitching of Rube Melton, in a game halted for 30 minutes by a state-wide blackout in Pennsylvania. Melton defeated Max Macon. Macon allowed the Phils nine hits.

Reds Lose Five Straight

Johnny Lanning allowed the Reds only six hits while blanking them to give the Pirates a 3-0 victory. It was the fifth loss in a row for Cincinnati. Carl Hubbell won his eighth be tory in a row and ngnth of the year as the Giants walloped the Braves, 10-2. the Giants batted around and scored five runs wa¥ enough for Hubbell, who allowed only six hits. Eddie Miller's two-run homer accounted for the Braves’ only runs. Mel Ott hit his 21st homer to gain the league lead in that department over Dolph Camilli of the Dodgers.

Another Blackout

The Red Sox put over the winning run in the 10th inning against the Yankees on Dom DiMaggio’s fly to deep right field for an 8-7 triumph.. Johnny Peacock began the rally with a double and reached third ona sacrifice. Then Pete Fox ran for him and across when DiMaggio loosed his blow. Joe Gor!don hit a three-run homer in the

Alex Carrasquel and Phil Marchildon hooked up in a pitching duel to give the Sengtors a 2-1 triumph over the A’s if another contest delayed 45 minutes by the blackout. Both moundsmen gave up seven hits. The winning marker was put over in the seventh when Ellis Clary singled home Bruce Campbell.
