. To help the housewife keep posted on what ‘is being “cocked up” here are some tips on the current scene—all subject to last-minute
changes, of course.
DEAR JANE JORDAN-—After being a widow for four years in the early spring I married an army officer who went overseas for duty. I had intended to keep this marriage a secret but early this summer I
confided in a lady friend, one whom I had known for years. At first she seemed pleased. In a few weeks she started to change, becoming catty and she is no longer even good combany. caused me to be very disap“pointed in her. After all these years can it be I've found out her real disposition? Now that I am the wife of an army officer, she as well as several other friends think I am rolling in money and have the idea I owe them something. The whole matter is very disturb- ~ ing. Now I seem to be standing alone, with no one to talk to. Of course it is the green monster, raising its head. I seek your advice on ‘how to be happy even though I have done what g wanted to do without consulting my friends or family. I have started to live my own life after years of letting my family and friends live it for me and it seems to have created a breach in my friendships. The fact that I am middle aged is no reason why I should dry up and blow away. What do you think? WORRIED.
» ” ” : Answer—Well, don’t let it worry you. You've done what you want to do. You've proved that although
you are a middle aged woman you still can win a husband. Perhaps it isn’t the fact that your friends resent so much as the dramatic way you did it. Young people marry secretly to outwit their parents, but there isn't much point in secret marriages between mature partners. You attracted attention to yourself by doing an out-of-the-ordinary thing and let yourself in for a bit of gossip. If your friendships have survived the test of years they will survive this test, too. It is up to you to decide whether your {friends are worth keeping or not. If so, simply overlook their behavior until they get over their surprise. Apparently you feel that they have tried to run ‘your life for you. Suddenly you showed them you were ‘independent of them.. Doubtless there was a spark of malice in your failure to inform them of such an important event. And if there was, you mustn't be surprised if they retaliate. " JANE JORDAN.

blow. . . . However, an appeal provision of the order :will probably be invoked to relieve the threat to synthetic leg lure. Did you know that manila rope

rubber, metal and toothpaste tubes? P. S—Don’t try to foist off old razor blades, wanted.
Fuel Oil Prospetts
For those who can’t or won't convert oil furnaces. .to coal, a good guess is that only 50 or 60 per cent of last year’s oil consumption will be allowed in rationed states. . . . However, there probably will be an appeal mechanism for cases where curtailment. causes serious hardship to families with invalids or small babies in the house. Those who still suffer after having taken precautions to conserve heat—such as ' weather stripping, storm windows or reduction of water-heating — will stand best chance of getting extra gallons. they could not cut out their cheaper services—such as “wet wash,” “rough dry,” etc. Then, because of the tire shortage, they had to permit establishments to cut out “week-end discounts” for wash picked up and delivered. } Wooden Shoes? Washington officials maintain that tests being made of different types of jointed wooden soles for ladies’ shoes are largely a style promotion stunt for the time being. They admit that fruits of the experimentation with wood might come in handy in a year or so, but contend that new methods of using
tanning oils and fiber are extending].
the life and supply of sole leathers adequately so far. Don’t depend upon being able to get electric heaters to warm up bathrooms or nurseries in fuelrationed areas this winter. . . . Production of the handy units, stopped some time ago, will not be resumed even for “Victory” models, since any heater requires too much critical nickel and chrome.. Existing heater supplies are too small to
first served’ till they're gone. The temporary beef and pork shortage in the midst of plenty has forced OPA to bring lamb under a 60-day ceiling to keep customerdemand from bidding it out of sight. Now only mutton—from sheep over a year old—and poultry are “unceiled” in the meat line,
Odds and Ends
Further shellac restrictions have given the record industry another shock. . . . Housewives will get 4
cents a pound for their salvaged fats under the new OPA ceiling. When you buy packs of cartons of cigarets, you have a right to demand the same number of free book matches that you got back in March. OPA says chiseling on matches violates general price control. Even indispensable studio couches and .sofa-beds have had. to give in to war. . . . No more steel, except screws and nails, is to be allowed for their manufacture. Innerspring mattresses generally, will fade from the furniture show room, and only 25 per cent of last year’s coil springs and 50 per cent of the bexsprings may be made.
