14th Triumph

~~ By PAUL SCHEFFELS United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Aug. 12.—Manager Joe Cronin .of the Boston Red Sox used to send his pitchers to ‘the showers fast—too fast, some said— but he took his time with Tex Hughson and the slim, handsome young righthander has repaid him by becoming the American league's out‘standing pitcher. Hughson, who has won 14 games against only three losses this season, was a ball of fire-in the minors. In his first real trial with the Red Sox —July of 1941—he looked. even better. Hughson gave up 10 hits as he shaded the Yankees, 3-2, in 11 innings- yesterday, blanking the New Yorkers in nine of the 11 innings. Milnar Misses One-Hitter

Dizzy Trout won his ninth victory as the Tigers shaded the Indians, 3-2, in the nightcap of their twilight double-header. Trout, backed up by a 12-hit Detroit assault, beld Cleveland to. seven blows and won the game when Detroit shoved over a run in the eighth. Al Milnar failed by one hit to pitch a nine-inning ne-hitter as the Indians and Tigers battled 14 innings to a 0-0 tie in the first game. The game was called because of a league rule prohibiting use of lights in any game starting in daylight.

2 | Milnar had a no-hitter until the

ninth, when he disposed of the first two men and had only: Roger Cramer to get by. But Cramer slapped a clean single to right to destroy the no-hitter. nny Galehouse held the White Sox to four hits, ending their ninegame winning streak as his St. Louis mates blasted Ed Smith and Joe Haynes for a, 9-2 victory. It was Smith's 18th defeat: against

= | three victaries.

Mungo Wins With Help Washington handed the A’s a 3-1

= setback as Buck Newsom, veteran

righthander, turned in a five-hitter for his 10th triumph, The Senators

S| won their fifth straight and 12th

in 17 starts by scoring once in the first and twice in the fifth. The Giants took over third place in the National league by beating the Braves, 64. The Giants punched out five- -hits for five runs in the third as Van Lingle Mungo, with some help from Ace Adams in the ninth, marked up his first win. Mungo. departed with two on -and none out in the nith, Adams getting the side out, but not befare two runs came over. Hank Gornicki’s six-hitter gave the-Pirates a 3-1 victory over the Reds, who dropped into fourth place. For the second day in a row, Bob Elliott hammered over the runs that .gave the Bucs the decision. With the score tied at 1<all and two out, he whipped out a hot single to right to score two runs. Max Lanier won :his eighth vietory as the Cards clipped the Cubs; 7-2, to trinf 4dlé Brooklyn's paté-

Bl. [setting margin to 8%, games. Lan-

ier held the Cubs to five hits as the Red Birds clinched the game with

State Softball Semi-Finals

Indianapolis has been selected as one of the two semi-final sites for the state softball tournament. Six teams, including Allison Patrol, local sectional and regional champion, will complete in the Indianapolis semi-final beginning Saturday night. All games are to be played at Speedway stadium, Ft. Wayne was awarded the other semi-final by State Commissioner Jack Ledden of South Bend. Allison will oppose the winner of the Cambridge City regional in the first game here Saturday night. Columbus and Lafayette winners

7

bany and Washington, respectively, Sunday afternoon for the right to meet in the championship tilt Sunday night. Meanwhile, the Allison siuad was beaten last night, 2 to 0, by an allstar team selected by local tournament fans. Logan Kinnett was forced to retire from the mound for Allison in the fifth inning and the all-stars climbed on Pollikin, relief pitcher, for their victory. The same two teams will meet tonight at 8:30 o'clock at Stout stadium. A third game, if necessary in the two-out-of-three series, will be played tomorrow night at Stout. : St. Catherine beat Holy Trinity, 5 to 3, in the preliminary game last night in a playoff for the senior C. Y. O. league championship,’

ond on four hits, all singles. base running hurt the Tribesters in that stanza. Then the Redskins got only one hit ‘after the second and it was a double by Joe Moore in the third. Vandenberg had the Indians eating out of his glove in the last four frames. ? Best blow of the game was Packey Rogers’ triple with two on in the seventh, He is the Brewers’ third sacker and a former Indian.

Tribe’s Gil English in the sixth when he robbed Griswold of a hit by making a spectacular running shoe-string catch with one hand. In the second game over the regulation nine innings the Brewers got to Chief Hogsett for three runs on three hits, a walk and a sacrifice in the initial inning. And the Indians never matched that total.

franconi in the second and one in the ninth. The Brewers scored their fourth marker in the fifth and in the seventh they set off a dizzy rally for five runs and boosted their total to nine. They collected 16 hits and: four were for extra bases. At the end of the third inning of the second game the Tribe ball glub management staged a practice blackout and the big crowd followed instructions. The fans remained in their seats and the ball players and umpires remained motionless on the field. All park lights were turned off and it really was black in the huge stadium for a couple of minutes. —(E. A).

First Quarterback | At Indiana Dies

Times Special BLOOMINGTON, Aug, 12.—Indiana university today had lost one of its all-time great athletes and its No. 1 athletics supporter on the Pacific coast in the death in Lincoln, Neb., of Fred D. Cornell, quarterback of the first football team to ‘wear the colors of the Hoosier state school. Word of the death of Cornell was received by Z. G. Clevenger, university athletic director, from Lincoln, where the former I. U. athlete was serving as secretary of the Scottish Rite. Entering’ I. U. in 1886 Cornell went out for football and filled the

versity team to engage in intercollegiate competition. He also joined the baseball squad as a

team. His baseball apility, however, attracted the notice of Cornell university, then an eastern champion, and he was induced to transfer to the New York school ‘to finish his education and to pitch the Cornell baseball team to a New York state championship.
