Mannie Seamon Had a Dream: Louis Fights Conn in 6 Weeks
By BURTON BENJAMIN Times Special Writer
NEW YORK, Aug. 11 —Mannie Seamon had a dream the gther night,
and it went something like this: The phone rings. Voice:
lough. You all set? Seamon: Mike, I've been set since the Simon fight. Jacobs: O. K., Mannie, what to do. \ At that . point, Mannie Seamon, successor to the late Jack Blackburn as trainer of the world heavyweight champion, becomes very much alive. “All that’s holding me back,” he admits, “is that I'm only dreaming about the phone call. Everything’s set. Joe's trunk is packed, His gloves. are at the bottom rubbed
you know
soft, His mouthpiece and headgear are soaked in vaseline. His gym and roadwork stuff are cleaned and ready. There's plenty of adhesive and bandages.”
Give Him Six Weeks
Seamon believes -six -weeks would be plenty of time to get the champion in fighting trim. “All I would let Joe do,” says Seamon, “is eat and sleep. I'd nib him down a few times to loosen him up and relax’ his muscles. Maybe he’d play a little golf but no boxing or roadwork. He's been
and marching. His muscles: are tightened up. He needs two weeks of rest and four of training.” Seamon, 45, has been in the fight game for 27 years. His actual career as a combatant covers two brief engagements.
Seamon Fought Twice
“I fought twice and was knocked out twice,” he grins. “The ref gave me a count the second time that
catch ‘a cold on that floor. It's draughty and there are ho -blankets. - That was enough for me. I became a trainer.” He handled such top-notchers as Leach Cross, Johnny Wilson, Gene Tunney, when he was a lightheavyweight; Johnny Ertler, Tod Morgan, Ted Kid Lewis and Primo| Carnera, the Italian Alp. Seamon has, been with the Louis entourage since July of 1937. He was hired off the WPA rolls by Blackburn, a friend of 20 years standing, a month before the Louis-

in Chicago when Louis met Abe Simon in Madison Square .garden last:March. Seamon took over the head trainer's job. How did he speak to Louis?” = ‘“You've got to talk directly to a fighter,” declares Seamon. “No ‘please do this, and please do that. I told Louis after the third round: ‘Joe, youre wild. Settle down. Shorten up your punches. Walk right in and belt, this guy.’ “He looked at me and said: ‘Ok., Mannie.’ After that it was easy.”

[HSAA Acti By vim PRESS Little action has been taken by the Indiana High School Basketball association to alter the 1943 basketball tournament schedule or select a site for the state plgy-offs, A. L. Trester, chairman of the I.H.S. A A. said today. Trester said action was being delayed because war-time regulations, which are/expected to effect a number of ghanges in the tournament set-up, may change “considerably” in the next few months and void any action taken by the association at the present time. Greatest need for tourney playoffs next year -is an adequate field house since the navy now has. use of the huge Butler field house, scene of the gala event during past years. The Indiana fairgrounds coliseum has been mentioned as a possible site for the 43 contest.
Coliseum Available
Although the army air corps has taken over the fairgrounds, the coliseum remains available for public functions. While it is viewed as the only logical site for
would be far inferior to the fieldhouse in’ many ways—mainly in that it couldn’t come close to helding the 14,000 persons who annually pack the Fairview campus building. ‘Tire rationing, and anticipated gasoline restrictions are other factors expected to dampen the sports event this year. -Alterations may be required to eliminate one or more of the four play-offs required to determine the championship team. - : Some observers believe it possible
tournament entirely and that the association—and fans—will have to be content to name either regional or sub-regional champions. Should sectional tournaments be conducted, the three-day events will be played Feb. 25, 26 and 27, Trester said. He emphasized .the “if they are played” clause because there is no certainty at the present time that the preliminary events will be staged at all.
