On the Sandwich Repertoire

CAN YOU MAKE A GOOD SANDWICH? One with flavor—a super

sandwich that doesn’t taste like anything you ever ate before? Or does

on wheat, tuna on rye.

You'll probably be making a lot of sandwiches during the remainder |-

, your repertoire sound like a drug store menu: Ham on rye, egg salad

of the summer, sandwiches for picnics, sandwiches for that husband on

the night shift, a dainty snack of a sandwich for yourself. Have you ever tried cooked fillings? They are easy to blend, easy to spread and ever so easy to eat. If you have one of those coppericlad stainless steel skillets or deuble

‘boilers, they are perfect for ‘cooked | -

Ss. If your family is the kind that says “NO” when it comes to liver, try this cooked filling. They'll prgbably change their minds and declare it ops:

VITAMIN SPREAD

them in beaten egg and milk with a dash of salt and pepper. Saute in butter. They'll emerge light and

delicate as a souffle with crisp little|

edges. . "Here's a sandwich with a bit of flair that can be tucked next to some of the plain Janes. It has a * cooked mushroom filling: MUSHROOM FILLING 12 1b. mushrooms 14 1b. butter or margarine . 1 T. flour .- % cup cream or evaporated milk 1 t. salt 1s t. pepper % t. blended herbs (if desired) Wash the mushrooms and put through coarse blade of food chopper or chop finely with a knife. Persons ranging in age from 21 to 40 may join the first reserve which makes them available for military duty. The second reserve is designed to serve in local disasters and includes married nurses, those over 40 and those physically unfit for military duty. School board}:

dismissed a married’ ‘dental hygienist for the primary schools who was going to have a baby on the grounds that an - expectant moth= er was not “competent” to Ruth Millett ~~ ct as a school employee. The state public instruction superintendent reversed the decision of the school board .and the matter was finally taken to the county court. There the. judge ruled that pregnancy cannot be construed as incompetency and then gave a much needed lecture to ‘the effect that during a time such as this all married ‘women should be encouraged to have children.

sion. If women are needed as badly as we are told to fill the jobs be= ing vacated by men, then married women will have to go into the professions and into industry in increasing numbers. But they shouldn't be kicked out of their jobs when they become prégnant, if a physician says they are perfectly able to hold down those jobs. 2 # 2 Since the beginning of time women have gone right on doing housework during their pregnancies. And there aren’t many jobs in business, in the professions, or in industry that are harder than washing and ironing, scrubbing floors, cooking meals, washing dishes, and caring for small children. i Of course, in this particular case the school board probably never really believed: that a prospective mother isn’t physically competent to carry on a school job. What they probably had in mind was that it might be embarrassing to have a prospective mother around school children. But that is an old-fogey notion, all out of

it is pretty generally conceded—for|

DEAR JANE JORDAN—I am an only child. My father and mother have quarrelled since they were married. I love my parents and cannot be mean to them. My father told me that he cares only for me, and my mother is jealous of me. My home life was miserable. They insulted my friends, both boys and girls and tried to make me hate everyone. I was no. nervous and unhappy trying to make them quit fighting. My father told me that if I got a job he would disown me, but I did get a job and met a nice fellow whom I married. I have been married five years and have a lovely home. Whenever my husband was gone my father would try ogest me to come home. I have been happy in my own home and have many friends. I love people.
