“New vSub-Proof’ Radio Set Buoys Up Lonesome US “Sailors Morale
By THOMAS M. JOBNSON NEA Service Military Writer
NEW YORK, Aug. 7—A new
“secret” weapon has entered the war against the submarine men-
ace. It is no death-ray nor nerve"
gas, Just, a little black box with
knobs on it. The new device is a marine radio receiver whose ‘“anti-sub” feature is elimination of radiation. That word “radiation” has
‘been a deadly one for crews of
merchant ships. Ordinary receiving sets permit oscillator-tube energy to leak Back through the circuit and radiate onto the air off the antenna. Enemy subs planes, within 25 to 90 miles, can pick up this radiation on thei direction’ finders and from. it figure the position of the ship, ; 8 x =» Tih THE NEW non-radiating receiver was devised by E. H. Scott,
: lic,
of Chicago, a noted radio expert
who experimented with early
radios back in his native New |
Zealand, and during the four years of World War I. ¢ Unknown to the general pub-
fact that an ordinary radio receiv-
ing set transmits radiation.
Radiation - provided a fine chance for spies. Shipping as a sailor, and smuggling aboard an innocent receiving set, a spy can
! notify a Supmerine of the ship’s
enemy U-boats have been - profiting - from the unsuspected
whereabouts by merely turning it
on, then jump overboard, to he picked up:before or after ‘the sub
; launches its torpedo. But even a perfectly loyal sea-
man ‘who tunes in on his favor“ite dance or song program may “send ‘his ship; his mates and him-
self to Davy Jones’ locker.
8 9 = sO THE GOVERNMENT had to forbid anyone: aboard any merchant vessel of "1600 tons or over
from using a radio receiving set while at sea—which depressed the morale of sailors on today’s long, lonesome’ voyage. Some even have refused to sign on. This has been a nightmare against which government .and employers have struggled. But they simply could not risk letting the sailors use receiving sets with
"the seven seas virtually a danger
zone. To counteract this secret
danger, the government asked for .|
a secret weapon. In respohse,
the Scott non-radiating Xscuiver was produced, the result of more than nine months of intensive research. : : : The box<is only 20% inches wide, 17 deep, 12 nigh, and in a metal cabinet, weighs 103 pounds. It has an 8-inch P,. M. speaker with 21-oupce magnet, a phone jack and phono terminals to connect a record player. Its power
supp}y is 115 volts, 60 cycles A. C. but there is a converter for D. C.
