Gala Frocks Have Accents Of Glitter

Color Contrast Adds :

New Style Interest

Times Special * ‘NEW YORK, Aug. 6—Sequins and beads, gold and silver-colored nailheads glitter and glint from many of the latest New York creations

being shown here for gala fall occasions. Not only do afternoon and eve-] ning dresses sparkle with a new

luster, but also many two-piece cos-|

tumes of wool for street and daytime wear boast the magic of a Midas touch. Slim creations of wool crepe, often combining contrasting colors, . are

enriched with jet and sequin em-|

broidery. in many new and interesting ways. A group of harlequin-type dresses, in which brilliant colors are used position, even further emiMellished with jet or jeweled buttons. One of these festive frocks has one’ chartreuse and one pink sleeve and a tiny up- | standing collar of pale blue.

For the Coed

For the college girl there are|

some sophisticated date dresses of black or bright colored crepe that are embroidered in: beads

nailheads stud a smooth creation of green rayon crepe and tiny loops of black beads give a new surface to a dress of bright red. Black plastic ,nailheads provide a. new note of elegance to a grege crepe suggested for the “bride’s mother.” The nailheads are scattered over the dress from neck to ‘hem and band’ the collar and belt in douple rows. Green sequins and crystal dangles form an enchanting collar on an intricately draped dress of green rayon Jersey. A dress of aqua wool crepe has gem-studded bracelets attached right to the sleeves. Jewel buttons are noted everywhere with cut glass set in gilt and black enamel like Jim Brady diamonds.

Fresh Paint Makes - ‘New’ Furniture

Perhaps the budget ‘won't allow - for that new bedroom furniture you were planning to buy now that you want to put every available dollar in war savings bonds. But you can give the pieces you have a new dress—something gay and attractive. Choose a scheme for the room— and if you do not see on the paint color cards just the shade you want, have your dealer mix you a really lovely and unusual shade. But be sure he mixes enough. Rub the surface of the furniture down smooth and free of any dirt or old - finish. Buy a good paint and apply it evenly. ‘ Be sure each coat is absolutely dry before applying the

next one. Then to. add further life and interest, investigate decal patterns. They are inexpensive, easy to apply. Another interesting idea is to buy pastel colored plastic handles in the five and dime store for bureaus,| chests and such and decorate each with tiny motifs cut from flower decals. Don’t overdo the decorating however. A few designs are lovely {00 many are like Wo much frosting on a cake.

Businessmen Adopt The Fabric Hat

Cool, lightweight fabric hats beJong in the businessman’s wardrobe y’ve become as desirable. for him as for the sportsman. This year in hat departments he’ll find models especially designed for town and street wear—styles tuned to different age groups and varied tastes, from conservative to discreetly dashing. Color range is excellent—beige, white, rust, natural, brown and green—with matching or contrasting bandings. Important to note about these is their special finish, which gives the fabrics a soft, supple drape and makes them resistant to sudden showers and non-oily spots and stains, yet does not prevent free air circulation.

: ‘Sunday Supper Salad

For a Sunday supper arrange in individual salad bowls slices of potted meat, stuffed eggs, sliced to-

' matoes, potato salad, on bed of let-

tuce. Garnish with ripe olives, sliv-

+ ers of crisp green peppers and raw

carrots. Accompany with hot cheese biscuits and hot coffee.

College

GONE ARE THE DAYS when decoration of her room at school wa

a setténg for her off-duty hours as that provided by her own home. A major purchase probably will be a bedspread—and. maybe. “draperies to match.” These may be of quaint, ruffled chintz or, if she “goes for” less frilly effects, of sturdy denims accented by pastel rainbow stripes, costing less. than the chintz ‘but equally effective in supplying notes of color. : 8 & THERE EVEN MAY BE a throw rug or two in lush-looking pastel boucle yarns that deny their comparatively low price. Desk sets and student lamps, too, are taken along with gay cushions for brightening touches. And she'll probably insist upon a portable phonograph ora. small but efficient radio. If inquiry reveals that’ linens are not supplied at her school, she'll tuck in an assortment of sheets, pillowcases, etc.’ The final touch to her student-days housekeeping will be a few cups, saucers and plates for between-meals snacks. After that, her only problem will be to get the “gang” out of her room

Those typical war-summer activi-

; and scalp just as it does your skin.

‘Use That Brush’

"Tightly wound turbans are no encouragement to that essential of hair beauty, good circulation. And you know how literally perspira-tion-caked dust . obliterates

‘| natural sheen of healthy hair.

I asked a world-famous expert

GOOD, MILD shampoos are im-|

portant, and an occasional treat‘ment, in the salon” or at home. For this’ purpose, one house has concocted a cream hair pack which works quite like a facial mask. They have, too, a new light, non-greasy oil which you spray-on with dtomizer or apply sparingly with fingertips to screen the hair from sun and grime #s skin preparations guard your complexion against coarsening exposure. Of course, nothing will supplant regular brushing, and therefore this expert suggests a really rousing brushing in .your bathing suit—on

First, take a few hands-over-

, - . DEAR: JANE JORDAN—My husband and I have been married over 30 years and I love him dearly. He declares that he loves me and| I know there is no other woman | who could take my place as his wife, However, he has had two

clandestine affairs with women,|:

both up in their seventies, both twenty years older than he.

Will you please tell me what at- |

traction such old women could have for a man so much. younger? He is an unusually nice looking man and has average intelligence. PUZZLED.

2 ” - Angwer—Actually I do not know why your husband has an urge for old women. It is easy to pass snap judgment and say that he is a man

who has been unusually devoted to|. his mother and that he never has|

been able to replace her. Perhaps he seeks her prgtotype in women of

her age, hoping to regain: the se-|

curity he felt in his mother’s love during childhood. Perhaps some infantile desire, never fully gratified in boyhood re-

mains with him in. maturity. This|

is the obvious explanation but it may not fit the case at all. At any rate these women do not represent very. serious competition. Since your marriage is satisfactory otherwise you can afford to

“|ignore one quirk in your husband’s

character. Your letter suggests that the trouble is in the past and it may never recur. ‘After all there aren’t many 70-year old women interested in such an affair.

. DEAR JANE JORDAN—I am a gir! of 17, very fond of a boy of the same age. I have known him for about three years. He is very nice but not one to show his feelings. We had gone together for about six months when he had to move. During the two years he was away I wrote to him as he requested but received no answers to my letters. I found out that he had been going with another girl and I stopped

writing. I am going with anotHer|-

boy who is very fond of me and I like him though not as well as the first. The first boy came back and I have dated him and had the nicest time I have had in a long while. I want to go with him but I am undecided because I am afraid he will start going with someone else again or fail to answer my letters and I will be heartbroken again. What shall I do? :

Npaleg . Answer—Why insist upon such an exclusive relationship at your age? Why can’t you enjoy the boy’s society when he comes around and let him have other dates, just as you ‘have other dates? You're too afraid of competition.

Perhaps the boy doesn’t want to bel

bound by one girl and in this he is exactly right. :
