NAZIS CAN FIGHT _
Stowe Says Russians’ Stand in Caucasus Reveals That, Hitler Doesn’t Have the Reserves for Two Major Offensives. By LELAND STOWE Copyright, 1942, by The Indianapolis Times and The Chicago Daily News, Inc. MOSCOW, Aug. 6.—After preparatory operations near Kharkov and Kursk, the first major blow of Hitler's summer offensive was launched on June 28 against Voronezh on the upper Don halfway between Rostov and Moscow.
In nearly six weeks this huge offensive has spread from Voronezh down the entire wide-curving course of the Don
to Rostov and far below it. It now covers a front, as the Don flows, of more than 400 miles and it constitutes a battle of the most concentrated deadliness that the Nazi armies have ever had to fight.
There are many aspects of this gigantic battle of the Don and the northern Caucasus which are unprecedented. It is the greatest, bitterest, : costliest and also most crucial battle that the nazi war mh"has éver
for the Hitler : has revealed to the world that Germany does ! not possess [ou enough reserves My Stowe either in manpower, in tanks, planes—or probably in gasoline—to launch two major offensives in Russia simultaneously. Here for the first time in this war be German high command is un-

movements of tank and panzer divisions, Here, too, for the first time in Russia, even after nearly six weeks of the most ferocious kind of uninterrupted assaults, the . Germans have failed to encircle any considerable body of their adversaries” forces.
Here, along the Don and south of the Don and despite the serious superiority in manpower, tanks and equipment, the armies of Field Marshal Fedor von Bock and Col. Gen. Paul Ludwig von Kleist still have been unable to score a clear and decisive break-through of the Soviet army’s lines at any point.
Throws in Everything
Hitler has thrown in everything the Nazis could muster, including|

many Hgngarian and Rumanian
divisions. His troops have made tremendous gains and dealt crippling blows t the Soviet Union industrially, ag riculturally and strategically.
Even so, Russia’s defending di visions, remain unbroken and stilt fighting with extraordinary skifll

Why Not Other Thrusts?
Even so the differences) between Hitler's 1941 and 1942 Rus#fian campaigns raise important questions. * Why, when Moscow last autumn heaped the most rankling humiliations of his whole life upon Hitler, does the fuehrer still fail} to launch, a second great offensije against, the Soviet capital unde# the most] favorable weather conf itions of | > | midsummer?
