IN CHINA, Aug. 1 (Delayed). — Forced down in the wilds of Tibet, an American pilot was sentenced to death by a native tribal chief but was rescued shortly before the hour
of execution by a traveling Chinese
merchant, it was disclosed today. Safe in China, Charles. Sawyer,
Emmet, Ida., a former American
Volunteer Group flier told the story of his last minute escape from the suspicious Tibetan tribesmen, who execute their condemned with spears. “I made a belly landing on an open field in a valley,” said Sawyer. “When I opened my eyes, there were. several dozen people in colorful clothes standing about a hundred feet from my plane. They carried spears, broadsyords and a few flint rifles at leas undred years old. “They just stood thee, watching me. But half an hpupiater a young man dashed up plane/ He was a giant—at least six feet four. He climbed up on .one wing, A moment later the tribesmien stormed the plane. 5 “They dragged me from the plane

from April 11 to July 8, before com- |E
ing here from their base in horth-
eastern Australia, the crew’s atti- : tude was summed up by Pilot Wal- |Z
ter Krell of Greenwich, Conn., who ig¥tredited with the greatest’ number of operational hours. He recently was promoted to captain. “This is Jour first breathing spell,” he explained. “We're mighty glad for a chance to get the old ship fixed up so we can have another: crack at the Japs.”
Gets Kick Out of Zoo
The pilot said he also is having his crew “overhauled,” getting their | teeth fixed and trying to furnish them with new kits. ; . Members of the crew aren’t rave ing about the city’s wintry climate,
but they are taking advantage of 3
every minute of their stay. Capt. Krell said he had been getting some relaxation by visiting the local zoo. The Australian co-pilot, Graham Robertson, is enjoying a vacation with his wife and family elsewhere,
‘the pilot said.
Catches Up on Eating
Navigation Lieutenant Eugene Grauer of Port Washington, Wis.,
has been spending his time getting |=
instruments checked and attending
to needs of the crew. In his spare (S
time, he’s making the rounds of the movie houses and filling up on his | favorite dish—oysters. “Our crew has been together Since |; leaving the United States, and we are one happy family,” he said. The radio man, Sergt. Pat Nor-
ton, Hartford, Ill, is so impatient (=
to get back into action he accompanies Capt. Krell on his daily inspection, always finding something aboard the bomber with which he can tinker.
Hoosier One of Crew™
Sergt. Norton said he. wants to |=
“get this job over with” so he can return: to marry Laverne Blocker of St. Louis. : Bombardier Corporal Walter Darden said he feels “like a fish out of water” waiting to get back into the fight with nothing to do but go to the movies. His friend, Sergt. John Engleman of Petersburg, Ind., sidestepped the question of whether he attends the
i movies alone with a slow wink.
Sergt. Engleman is: credited with bagging two Zeros and one Japanese transport.
