LONDON, Aug. 5.—German spies
; operating in England have dusted
off one of their oldest tricks in ‘an effort to break down the’ reticence of the American troops and to dis-.
{cover the whereabouts of the Amer-
ican units stationed here. The trick is very simple and is being based on the frailty of human nature. - It is pretty effective. - It works like this: : American soldiers and officers are told by their barroom friends that “Lord Haw Haw,” broadcasting from Berlin, has announced the name and location of every unit of the American army stationed in. England.
Here’s How It Works
The man who hears this automatically registers in his mind the alleged fact that Haw Haw has given the name and location of his
particular unit. Later, in retelling the story to other people he is more likely than not to embellish the tale by saying, “Do you know that Lord Haw Haw announced the other night that marines are stationed at wheresit?” If the German agents are lucky they overhear some of these stories and get the information they want. It is a fact that about two weeks ago the story- was going all over London that Haw Haw had given full details about the American forces in the united kingdom. Ac-|% tually, he has never done anything
of the kind. Subsequently, officers|io-; Homer
were heard complaining, “After all,
what is the sense of all this hush-|
hush if the Germans know everything already?”
It Worked in France
The Germans pulled this same stunt in France when they wanted to discover the name of the village near Arras in which the British G. H. Q. was located. “Do you know that Haw Haw has announced that the British G. H. Q. is in Arras?” was quickly perverted on that occasion into, “Do you know that Haw Haw has announced that the British G. H. Q. is at Habareq”
land the Germans undoubtedly got
the information they wanted as the results. Measures will presumably be taken to suppress the current “the Germans know all about. it” story
before it does serious harm.
