Smart Boxers Hang Shingles In Pittsburgh
: ye By CHESTER L. SMITH Sports Editor, Pittsburgh Press PITTSBURGH, Aug. 4—What with the piteous pleas for succor that we in the backlands have heard from the Broadway boxing mob these many months, it may interest a few of the citizens to know that there. are spots on the map where the fighters and their business agents are not in the breadline. Take Pittsburgh, for instance, and I don’t mean the Pirates, who are being taken by almost everybody, including the Braves and Phils on occasion. Our cozy little city has turned out to be a happy hunting ground for the hungry sons of slug. They can have butter on their bread here, and ice cream with their pies. If I were a boxer I would come here immediately and hang out my shingle, Then I would cease to worry.
Crinkly-Nosed Mintz Boxing here is in the hands of the Rooney-McGinley Boxing club. The Rooney is Art Rooney, who, with Bert Bell of Philadelphia, owns and operates the Steelers in the National Football league. Mr.
_ McGinley is a sportsman about
town who is well liked and a square shooter, Their matchmaker is = crinkly-nosed Jacob
Mintz, a voluble character who never sleeps, is a tireless talker and whose ring career began and ended when he was knocked out in Charleston, W. Va., many years ago. In the summey, the Rooney-Mc-Ginley combine uses Forbes field, the home of the Pittsburgh ball club, as its base, and just th other night it tossed off what regarded as its greatest card. And it was a lulu, too. Matchmaker Mintz paired Anton Christofordis and a local boy, Mose Brown, who got famous by beating Jimmy Webb three times hand-running. He put together Ezzard Charles of Cincinnati and Booker Beckwith of Chicago, Joey Maxim of Cleveland and Curtis Sheppard of Pittsburgh, Fritzie Zivic and Norman Rubio, and
Harry Bobo and Claudio Villar.
It was a grand card to watch. Bobo, Charles and Zivic won by knockouts and Christofordis and Maxim picked off decisions—but that’s not the story.
Out of Pocket
What made the news was the prices these gentlemen received for their services. Christofordis practically robbed the bank by drawing down a cool $8000. Bobo took away $3000, and Zivic got $2750, with something on the side for Urining auponess, they hint. In the $2000 bracket were Maxim and Rubio. Charles, by far the best fighter on the show, was paid $1500, as were Beckwith, Villar and Brown, The grapevine reports that Sheppard's bill was $750. The gross receipts were® in the neighborhood of $46,000, so that when the promoters added it all up, they found they were slightly out of pocket. It didn't worry them a bit. They are planning something bigger and better for the autumn. But can you imagine paying a guy like Christofordis $8000? The story is around now that Mintz is trying to match Christo and Charles for September—and that the Greek’s manager, Big* Hearted Con McCarthy, says he. will be glad to sign for $10,000, Would you blame him?
Holbrook Wrestles Koverly Tonight
Vic Holbrook who during the winter season dropped a one-fall verdict to George (K. 0.) Koverly, will attempt to erase that defeat when the two heavyweight stars clash in the mat feature tonight at outdoor Sports arena. The popular Holbrook meets the rough and tumble Koverly for two falls out of three. In his last two appearances he triumphed over: Ray Steele, a former champ. Holbrook is from Los Angeles and Koverly- is out of Glendale, Cal Opening action is a return match between the Great Mephisto of Newark and Jules La Rance of Montreal, while Dorve Roche of Decatur, Ill, opposes Ronnie Etchinsen of 8t. Joseph, Mo., in the semiwindup.

FT. WORTH, Aug. 4—~Down ‘in this neck of the well-known timber, sports fans are wondering how a determined gent like Rogers Hornsby still is a refugee from the Big Show.
Rajah is rated as a wizard, noth-
ling less, for fashioning a pretty
good Texas league ball club from free agents and pulling it by its
loop. Hornsby had a couple of fair veteran right-handers and a cqQrking fielder when he took over the joint job of general and playing manager of the Ft. Worth Cats last winter. Now, in mid-season, he has built around that nucleus with boys somebody else didn’t want.
Makes Pitcher
Only the center-fielder remains from the actual gardeners on the spring squad, and he has been moved to left field. Most of the pitching staff Hornsby had this spring is on the job, but it has been augmented by one of the holdover outfleldérs, Hank Oana, the pure-bred Hawaiian, Oana is the sensation of the Texas league. He was slowed down to a walk and obscured in a utility role. Having a strong right arm, he filled in as batting-practice pitcher and soon had the Cat batsmen moaning, Thrown ‘in as a relief hurler against Beaumont, the junior edition of the Detroit Tigers, he stood them on their heads. Another good relief stint - convinced The Rajah and Oana drew a starting berth. He shut ’em out game after game until finally he hung up a no-hit,

letics from the coast a year or sO|.
ago with a. $35,000 tag on him but failed to stick. He’s hitting around 330 with Fort Worth and playing excellently afleld. What kind of a fellow is Hornsby? I've found him just about the most honest bloke I've ever bumped into. He's too honest, if anything. He says what he thinks, never alibis, goes on his own judgment, doesn’t worry too much, plays a percentage but generally sound game.
A Big Time Pilot
His lifetime * batting. average is 358. He was iii the majors 22 years, is recognized as one of the greatest’ infielders ever to scoop up a grounder, His admirers feel, despite the fact that he has held four major league managerial berths, he is strictly a big time pilot and should be directing fast company. By the way, you've all wondered how the greatest righthanded hitter in the record books happens to be called Rajah. It’s simple. That's exactly his Suth’n accent in pronouncing Rogers.
Clutch Hitter
Carl Martin, a former pitcher, will be at his shortfield position for the Pepsi-Cola Boosters tomorrow night when they battle Allison Patrol in the championship game of the loeal sectional softball tournament at Softball stadium. Martin batted in the winning run for the Boosters Sunday night against E. C. Atkins.
Giants Quit Twilight Ball gn NEW YORK, Aug. 4 (U. P.)— The Brooklyn Dodgers’ 7-to-4 army emergency relief game victory over the New York Giants last night may mean the end of twilight baseball in New York. The -game, which attracted 57,305 persons to the Polo Ground—the largest single game attendance there —was called in the ninth inning because of dimout regulations with the Giants having men orf first and second and no orfe out. Under baseball rule, it must go down as a Brooklyn victory and there is no appeal but President Horace Stoneham of the Giants announced that after the twilight game this evening there would be no more ball games at that hour at the Polo Grounds, : Brooklyn probably will continue to play out its twilight ‘schedule but the amount of criticism which followed the Dodgers’ 4-to-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals last
week may lead to a change of plans for next season.
