JAUNDICE FEAR

“ENDS IN ARMY

Surgeon-General Feels Sure Danger of New Cases Past.

By Science Service : WASHINGTON, July 31.—Danger of jaundice breaking out in the army among troops vaccinated against yellow fever is now over, the surgeon general feels sure. Contrary to rumors circulating for some weeks, no case of yellow fever has occurred in any of the troops. The sickness was. catarrhal Jaundice, an ailment that occurs in civil life and for which no specific germ cause has been identified.

Since March 1, 1942, there have|

been 28,585 cases of catarrhal jaun-

dice in some of the men vaccinated] There were|

against yellow fever, 62 deaths. This is a rate of one death to each 461 men who got sick, not one in 461 of all vaccinated. The number of deaths and of cases of jaundice were noi large enough to affect the war effort nor were they large enough to change the low death and sickness rates for the army as a whole.

Only Certain Baiches

Jaundice occurred only in men vaccinated with certain batches of yellow fever vaccine. The vaccine

+ was made from chick embryo pulp

which had been suspended in normal human blood serum. This type of vaccine had been used for a million vaccinations before the jaundice cases developed among troops getting the vaccine. The human blood was used because it keeps the vaccine active longer when it is stored before use. The unidentified germ of catarrhal Jaundice may have gotten into certain batches of vaccine from this serum. The point is not yet. definitely proved, but acting on the possibility, the surgeon general ordered all yellow fever vaccine for the army to be prepared with water.instead of the human serum.

Definitely on Decrease

This change was made April 15. Cases of jaundice have been definitely decreasing in numbers for the last three or four weeks. Peak of the outbreak apparently came during the week ending June 20, when 2997 admissions were reported during the week. The peak in number of cases occurred after the vaccine had been changed because it takes some time for the disease to develop. The cases reported were among men who had been given the human sgrum vaccine before. April 15,

INCENDIARIES LEVEL 9 BOSNIAN VILLAGES

< \' LONDON, July 31 (U, P.).—Ital-

lan planes, in desperate terroristic attacks designed to put down Jugoslav patriot resistance, have rained thousands of incendiaries on nine Bosnian towns, including the villages of Gorni and Vakuf, ac-

cording to private advices received

in London today. The towns, most of them -captured by the patriot army of Gen. Draja Mikhailovitch, burned for two days and hundreds were driven irom their homes, the advices said. These towns blasted and bombed from the air were in addition to 16 which Jugoslavian sources said were burned to the ground by Italian land forces. The axis occupation forces reportedly warned that every town liberated by Mikhailovitch's patriots would be raided similarly.

CHARGES DISMISSED IN. ‘GOOSIE’ LEE CASE

Charges of vagrancy were dismissed last night by Judge Ira M. Holmes against Joseph Blaire, 173, after Harry (Goosie) Lee, = wellknown: Negro political leader, failed to appear in the Beech Grove magistrate court to file further charges in a controvery last Tuesday in which Lee was shot and wounded. Judge Holmes told Blaire, who lives next to Lee’s Elite Saddle club at 62d st. and Rucker rd, that “you ‘are not guilty of vagrancy and there is no one here to charge you with anything else so I will have to let you go.”

OPPOSES DEDUCTION OF DEBTS FROM TAX

WASHINGTON, July 31 (U..P.). ~Senator Robert A. Taft (R. 0.) today forecast strenuous treasury opposition to a proposal that: persons paying off mortgages or other large debts be allowed to deduct part of those payments from income for tax purposes. Taft, a member of the senate finance committee, said he thought the treasury would be unwilling to accept the loss of revenue which would result from the adoption of that suggestion.

JUST ONE DAY FOR THIS U. S. SOLDIER

FT. DEVENS, Mass., July 31 (U. Po.—The government isn’t fooling when it says “the U, S. army builds men”. Pvt. Louis Longval and his company did this in one day: Hiked 14 miles, ran an obstacle course, threw hand grednades, had bayonet practice, went swimming, practiced I jitsu and prepared for an ingpection. Still fresh, Pvt. Longval got a pass, walked six miles to town, danced all evening and then hiked pack to camp.

STATE POLICE HIKE ARRESTS

Crack Down in Effort to Conserve Autos and Manpower.

In a continuing effort to conserve private passenger car facilities and to prevent death and injury to the state’s manpower reservoir, state police have made 5 per cent more traffic arrests and secured more convictions in the first six months of the current year than in a comparable period in 1941.

The work has been. accomplished in the face of a reduction of rural traffic accidents. In six months, 6036 accidents have occurred, of which 2504 have been personally investigated by state troopers. As a result, 1056 arrests were made and 892 convictions secured. A total of 1783 traffic arrests were made in June and 2770 warning tickets were issued. 'Theee-fourths of the traffic apprehensions were for violations while the car was in motion.

FBI PROBES BLAST

KINGS MILLS, O. July 31 (U. P.).—The cause of the fierce explosion that wrecked small drying houses at the King: Powder Co. yesterday killed five men and injured 11 may never be known. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents examined the scene of the explosion that was felt in Cincinnati suburbs, 26 miles to the southwest, but there was little more than deep craters in the ground to investigate. The company placed the damage at $25,000.
