ONFY COMMA OVER ALEUTIANS
Navy Reveals New Move to | Drive Jap Invaders
W From Islands.
WASHINGTON, July 30 (U, PJ). oUnification of command of American forces in the Aleutian islands area was interpreted in some
quarters today to be the first step|
in more determined efforts to drive
the Japanese from their footholds. The action followed agitation for ‘such a move in and out of con-
gress. It also comes after many|
congressiona) demands that drastic action be taken to ‘eliminate the threat to the Alaskan mainland. The navy did not announce we details of the new command. said only . that the same sort x command had been set up in the Aleutians as has been established in Hawaii, Australia, the Panama canal zone and the Caribbean area. The last action in the Aleutians was announced in a naval communique of July 21 which revealed that American submarines had sunk three Japanese destroyers in the vicinity of Kiska. That communique also ‘said that long-range army bombers had raided the encampment on Kiska,. Yesterday’s navy announcement came as President Roosevelt reviewed the Aleutian situation with the Pacific war council and as a four-man senate committee prepared to leave for an inspection of American defenses in Alaska.

When Bluebirds Come Over
It'll Amaze
DOVER, England, July 30 (U.P.). —The folks of Dover think the American song, ‘The White Cliffs
_|of Dover,” is fine but they wonder [where the writer got the idea there were blue birds around here. Apparently no one ever has seen a blue bird here, in peace or in war. A cheerful little air raid watcher said: “The birds we're most likely to see . are blackbirds with white crosses on them, with bombs under the wings and machine guns in their bills.” Dover has seen so many German bombers and fighters that the majority of the population now pays little attention to air raid sirens. “It’s when we hear the German planes or the shell hits that we hunt cover,” explained Miss Madge Underdown of the civil nursing reserves. Dover, directly across the channel from the big guns of the Ger-
man invasion force, has been hit
Folks of Dover
by 1435 shells and 440 bombs since May, 1940. Standing on the cliffs, watchers can see the flash of the German guns and time the flight of the shells, From 40 to 90 seconds usually elapse from the flash until the shells hit the British side.
