Balloons Protect Canal
In a jungle clearing in Panama, a barrage balloon crew lowers
“Betsy” during a tactical maneuver.
U. 8S. soldiers in Panama, by
keeping barrage balloons flying over the tropics, have provided a
{' new and important defense weapon for the Paanma canal. The bal-
loons now hover: protectingly over vital areas in barrages denser than those employed by Britain in the defense of London.

Force Victims In ‘Repulse Bay to March All Day Without Food.
By RICHARD C. WILSON Former United Press Manager at Manila, LOURENCO MARQUES, PORTUGUESE EAST AFRICA, July 27.— I was lined up with 68 others, including women and children, when took Repulse Bay hotel in operations around Hongkong. We were searched and robbed of watches and other valuables by soldiers and then marched to the commanding officer who kept us lined up, ,with hands in the! air, while he lectured us. He said that all Japanese were considered to be soldiers and therefore all foreigners must be regarded as soldiers. Apparently he was debating with himself as to whether to shoot us or try to frighten us with visions of the firing squad.
March Without Food
‘Later he ordered us back-to the hotel and the next morning we were marched nine miles over the hills to the city, with women and children as well as men burdened with their own luggage. We had no food or water during the entire day of marching. Once we saw nine Indian soldiers and five British soldiers captured. Later we heard a volley of shots, indicating what had happened to them. We were taken across the bay to Kowloon where ‘we were interned with from five to 14 persons in each room of the antiquated Kowloon hotel.
