SOFT PEDALLED,

HIGGINS CLAIMS

Cites ‘Advice’ That He Was

Played Down, Bethlehem Played Up.

WASHINGTON, July 24 (U. P). —Andrew J. Higgins, New Orleans shipbuilder, said today he had been advised that employees of a government war agency had been told to “puild up‘ the Bethlehem Steel Co.” and “to soft pedal and play down" his—-Higgins'—firm., The maritime commission last week cancelled a ‘contract for construction of 200 liberty ships at Higgins’ yards. Testifying before two house merchant marine subcommittees, Higgins said “a member of their staff” —the war agency’s staff—called him last night and told him that six weeks ago employees had been called in and advised “to soft pedal and play down Higgins, to soft pedal Kaiser and build up Bethlehem.”

Utilized Mass Production

By Kaiser, Higgins meant Henry J. Kaiser, west coast shipbuilder who, like himself, has utilized mass production methods in ship construction, Higgins did not say specifically what agency his informant referred to, but he had been discussing the

:maritime commission and left the

impression that it was the agency in question. Higgins said he had “known for 60 days” that the yard in which he expected to build the 200 liberty ships never would be completed. The maritime commission ordered the contract cancelled on grounds

{ that there is a shortage. .of steel.

Denies Steel Shortage

Higgins, who has denied existence of such a shortage, said that “this cancellation comes not from a shortage of steel but because of my unbridled tongue.” Higgins told the subcommittees he had complained that American ships were not adequately defended against the submarine menace and that such comments had been considered “lese majeste.”

NEW ORLEANS, July 24 (U. P)). —The unfinished Higgins shipyard is being dismantled, Lee R. Sanford, regional construction director of the U. 8. maritime commission, said today. Sanford estimated that 5000 purchase orders were involved and added these would be cancelled “as rapidly as possible.”

HEALTH GROUPS MAP PARLEY IN CAPITAL

Executive committees of two public health organizations met here today to plan for the annual conference of state and provincial health authorities and the association of state and territorial health officers to be held in Washington, D.C. The committees represent organizations in the United States, its territories, and Canada. Dr. John W. Ferree, state health commissioner, is secretary-treasurer of the state and territorial association and was host to the group at Hotel Lincoln,

LOCAL FIRM GIVEN ARMY-NAVY AWARD

The 20-worker Whittington Pump & Engineering Co. plant, 225 8S. Meridian st., has been awarded the new army-navy pennant for out-

~ standing war production records, it

was announced today, in Washington. : W. P. Whittington, head of the local firm, said his plant got the award “for accomplishing the impossible, I guess.” He said his plant is mainufacturing vacuum heating units for army projects. Mr. Whittington said there are only “four or

five” manufacturers of this equip-

ment acceptable to the war department.

MUNITIONS OUTPUT SOARS WASHINGTON, July 24 (U, P.) — ‘The joint United States-Canadian war production board reported today that the annual rate of munitions production in this country for the second quarter of 1942 was nearly four times that of 1941, and that Canadian production in the second quarter was almost tires times the 1941 rate.

u.s. Sailors on

Leave in London

LONDON July 24 (U. P).— United States navy men arriving “on leave from the American task force with the’ British fleet, said today that they had been in action against attacking German planes and had shot down three or four of them. They said the task force had been in action about 45 minutes all told against the enemy planes in a series of attacks. James McCleery, 20, Watertown, Conn. said that the navy men had been eager for action and had welcomed their first chance to fight. Hundreds of the sailors arrived today on their first leave.

ABC FINES 2 HERE: SUSPENDS 7 OTHERS

The state alcoholic beverage commission today fined Square Deal Liquors, Inc, 150 W. Washington st., $100 and suspended their liquor permit for five days for selling more than four quarts to one customer at one time. The M & M Cafe, Inc, 3404 N. Illinois st., was fined $50 for sale to a minor. The permits of five northern Indiana beer wholesalers were suspended by the ABC for five days for selling more than one-half barrel to non-permitees. The companies penalized were: The La Porte County Distributing Co., and Roscoe Meyer Beverage Co., both of La Porte; Michiana Beverage, Inc. South Bend; Lake Beverage Co., Fast Chicago, and Herman H. Riley, Rensselaer.

SUGAR BOOKS SHOW POPULATION GAINING

Hoosiers totalling 3,475,356, just 47,560 more than the state's 1940 census report, have registered for rationing books, according to William F. Rightor, state sugar rationing officer. Marion county's total registration for ration books has reached 491,434 which is 30,508 more than the 1940 census showed for the county. Mr, Rightor indicated that the registration seemed to bear out that the state's population had increased during the past two years because of war industries. He also said that other industries, such as canners, were employing persons from the south to work here. The registration of retail sugar users in the state totaled 9031 and 140 wholesalers registered. 'A total of 11,491 industrial and institutional users registered.

NO NEWS AS ANYONE COULD PLAINLY SEE

WASHINGTON, July 24 (U. P). —News was scarce at President Roosevelt's press conference today. Asked about new steps to control inflation, the president said he had no news. Asked about his reaction to the senate voting to take the synthetic rubber campaign away from the WPB, the president said no comment. Asked whether he planned to see Andrew J. Higgins, New - Orleans shipbuilder, the president said he didn’t know. Asked whether he planned to see Henry J. Kaiser, California shipbuilder, the president. said he didn't know. At this point, the newspapermen chorused “Thank you, Mr. President,” and filed out of his office.

U. S. TO COUNT VEHICLES WASHINGTON, July 24 (U, P.). —The WPB today ordered a na-tion-wide inventory of new commercial motor vehicles trucks, truck trailers, ambulances, hearses, station wagons and off-the-highway vehicles—as of the close of business on July 31.
