hits on an enemy battleship.”

These quotations from the navy department's thrilling story of the

Midway island battle add a glorybrilliant chapter to the history of the smallest —and least known — air arm of the United States forces. .One reason marine corps aviation is little known is that planes of the fleet marine wings have been scattered all over the vast fsland and coastal theater of war

—as holding forces, scouting forces

and initial striking forces. Integrated With Navy

Andther is that when joined in action by fleet units, the marines operate with and are indistinguishable from the navy fliers. Both! have identical equipment and aircraft insignia.

Hes, the marine airmen played eroic roles. The epic of Wake was something else again, of course; that was an all-Leatherneck show. Marine corps aviation is the one air arm that must be utterly selfsufficient, and by the same token, it is the most versatile. Individual pilots have extra responsibilities. ‘They go through the regular naval air training course, which includes aircraft carrier training because they must be able

to replace or relieve the navy’s|

carrier squadrons. After that, they spend six weeks with fleet marine aircraft tactical units, and then are assigned to marine aviation wings for squadron and group training.

40 Per Cent Amphibions

Actual numbers may not be mentioned, but today about 40 per cent of the marine amphibious force is aviation, and the increase is made geometric by the enlargement of the marine corps itself. Best idea, though, of the unusual
