\ The Musie Makers

‘EDGAR CLYDE ENNIS, his wife and his band are playing Plea Piper over at the Circle this week and the walls of that emporium of entertainment are bulging. He’s Skinnay, of course, and she’s Carmene, a Texas gal with a voice as smooth as two fingers of suds in a}

freshly poured glass of iced beer.

She sings as he leads the band. Then he. sings and the band |

WALLACE VOTE ENDS FLORIDA CANAL TIE

WASHINGTON, July 18 (U. P.).— For the second time within. a week yesterday, Vice President Henry A. Wallace was forced to cast his vote to break a tie in the sendte. Yesterday his vote prevented elimination of the Florida barge canal and other waterway projects from the $93,000,000 waterway-pipe-line bill. Following two days of debate in which Republicans, led by Senator Arthur Vandenberg (R. Mich.) had bitterly denounced the measure, the senate voted 30 to 30 on a motion by Senator Josiah W. Bailey (D. ‘N. C.) to make the bill exclusively a pipeline measure. Shortly before the vote Senate Democratic leader Alben W. Barkley of Kentucky had said that President Roosevelt

favored the bill and Mr. Wallace:

cast his vote against the Bailey amendment. The bill went back to the house where action was completed by unanimous concurrence in minor technical amendments made by the senate,

leads itself. It is a right smart | band, and you ought to hear them play “Jingle, Jangle, Jingle” and | you ought to hear her sing “Stormy Weather” and him sing | “Breathless.” The show also offers Don Cummings, the rope-twirling comedian, whose humor average is high; the Calgary Brothers with their superior brand of acrobatic pantomime and Ruth and Billy Ambrose, a fair team of ballroom dancers. On the screen is another in that agonizing Mexican spitfire series, one of those films you expect them to give away with a set of dishes, entitled “Mexican Spitfire Sees a Ghost.” Lupe Velez becomes a kind of Latin Judy Canova and everybody in the cast screams bloody ‘murder, until your ears ring. How pleasant it is, therefore, to get back to Mr. Ennis’ band and to music makers in general, for there may be more there than meets the eye.

Just Listen

IF YOU PASSED by the Circle last week, you probably noted the hopeful horde of youngsters who stood patiently for hours in the alley back of the theater waiting for autographs from the band. And if you saw the expressions on their faces you didn’t need to

be convinced of how much the kind of music made by Skinnay Ennis, Ted Weems, Kay Kyser and the rest means to them and to. the public at large. Never in my ramblings through alleys have I seen throngs waiting outside the stage doors of music halls where symphony orchestras are playing. It has never been my experience to elbow battle my way into a hall where a concert of classical works was being held. In our stuffed shirt moods, we reviewers tend to play down the fact that the popular bands are making the music that America hears. The folks are listening to guys like Ennis, Kyser, Weems, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Harry James, Gene Krupa, Fred Waring, Wayne King, Dick Jurgens, Alvino Rey, Horace Heidt, Bob Crosby, Guy Lombardo, Tom= my Dorsey and his brother Jimmy, Glenn Miller, Sammy Kaye, Red Norvo, Claude Thornhill, Ozzie Nelson and the rest.

#2 2 8 It's American Music THESE GUYS MAKE the music that reaches out and touches all of the folks. And yet they and their works are merely tolerated by the circle of critics who define what is great and good in Afherican music and exempt the popular bands from serious consideration.

You don’t go to a music hall to hear Kyser or Ennis. You go to the Circle theater. That is, if you can get in. And, strangely enough, the dissertations on American music I have read tend to forget about the popular bands, as if they were unworthy of mention. Critics, composers and the arbiters of cultural good fret and worry about whether we have American music or whether we don’t, and if so, where is it. Well, just run down to the Circlg this week. You'll hear American music. But. good.

Lana and Hoosier

On Honeymoon

HOLLYWOOD, July 18 (U. P.). —Lana Turner, an Idaho farm girl who ran a sweater into a movie career, honeymooned today with Hoosier-born broker Stephen Crane, shunning the bright lights in favor of their new Beverly Hills apartment. Mr. Crane, 27, proposed to the 22-year-old Miss Turner at 3 a, m. yesterday while they danced to «1 Realize Now” in a plushy night spot. A few hours later they were aboard a plane for Las Vegas, Nev, where they were married by the same judge who officiated at her short-lived marrige to orchestra leader Artie Shaw. “This time,” the actress said, “tie a knot that will stay tied for keeps.” Linda Darnell, raven-haired starlet, and Alan Gordon, free-lance press agent, made the trip with Mr. Crane and Miss Turner but passed up Judge George E. Marshall's offer to make it a double ceremony. Returning to Hollywood late yesterday, the newlyweds cancelled a music a champagne reception. “We're just too tired,” Miss Turner said. “We're going home.” Mr. Crane, whose home is in Crawfordsville, Ind., also had been married once before, to Caroline Kurtz of Indianapolis. Miss Turner’s next film is, oddly, “Marriage Is a Private Affair.”
