ARIZONAN LEADS
DESERT PILOTS
Two Other Americans in|,
R. A. F. Squadron at
Egyptian Front.
By HENRY GORRELL United Press Stal Correspondent
WITH THE R. A. F. IN THE| WESTERN DESERT, July 14 (U.
P) (delayed).—Royal Air Force Acting Squadron Leader Lance ‘Wade of Tucson, Ariz., who has shot down at least nine axis planes, and probably 11, in Africa during the - lagt 11 months, is setting the pace for American fighter pilots in the desert. Wade is of medium height, dark end wiry. A small mustache and thinning hair makes him look much older than 26. The squadron of Hurricanes that he temporarily is commanding includes two more Americans and several Canadians. Wade refuses to take leave, despite 240 consecutive operational flying hours. “I can’t let the boys down,” he said. “Besides maybe theyll soon give me a squadron all my own— an all-American squadron.”
May Get Own Squadron
That seems a distinct possibility, because there are a number of United States fighter pilots in the Aesert and others are arriving daily. ‘The R. A. F. also is increasing the number of its squadrons fighting the Germans. Wade just had returned from escorting a bomber patrol over enemy territory when he was inx -terviewed. Getting him to talk was 1 1 hard job. Besides, his squadron 3 always is ready to go on five minutes’ notice and has been operating at a terrific pace, with bombers going out every 20 minutes. Six days ago, he potted his ninth, ed, German plane. He also has two “probables” to his credit. “We had the advantage,” he said. “We caught the Germans under us. We jumped the Messerschmitt escort while another squadron took on the bombers and accounted for two confirmed and two probables. I got one.”
“That Doesn't Count”
Under Pilot-Officer Walter M. Schwartz Jr.. of Philadelphia, who has been with Wade's squadron two months and had some of the closest shaves of any of its members, kidded Wade into slight elabo-~ rations. “But you got another plane just the other day,” he said. “Yeah, but he wasn’t looking and doesn’t count,” Wade replied. “Don’t let him kid you,” Schwartz paid. “He’s the gent who's been shooting down all the Huns for this squadron. The very day I joined the squadron, Wade shot down two and one of them was a Messerhmitt. The other was a Stuka rive bomber. And, Lance, tefl hin about the time they got you near Agedabta (Libya) and you were two days walking ba “Oh, it wasn’t much,” Wade said. ®If it hadn't been for the squadron Sticking with me, I don't suppose I would have got back at all,

cember and I nailed a bomber on the ground. It blew up. I'll never
was holed by ack-ack or splinters from the exploding bomber. Anyway, I made a forced landing five miles from an enemy airdrome.
Rescued by Blenheim
“The boys from the squadron were going to see that nobody got me and followed me down ali the way to the ground. Then I started walking and kept contact with the squadron by using very lights, They kept contact with me as I legged it along and dropped bully beef. Finally a Blenheim came in after
me and I rejoined the squadron two days later.”
RAF officers consider Wade one
of the finest pilots in the desert. He was awarded the distinguished flying cross five months ago. Flight Sergt. Fred (Lucky) Davison of Yakima, Wash., a tall, lanky farm boy, has been with Wade's squadron a week. “I just am beginning to learn how to pick out Hun planes,” he said. “It's pretty difficult when the sun’s against you. I haven't done much, I'm just learning what it’s all about. “The only fun I've had so far was the other day when we chased some Junkers 88's and made them Jjettison their bombs,
‘They Call Me “Lucky”
“I've only been jumped once by Messerschmitts and had a tough time getting away. That's why they call me ‘Lucky.” Another new American arrival is Pilot Officer Thomas W. Prentice, 26, of Ponca City, Okla. Just starting a career as a lawyer, he joined] the R. A. F. the day Athens fell. He now flies Kitty bombers for another squadron, * “I've had some pretty successful goes against enemy airdromes in re-
