Helpful Hints for Prolonging
Je Life of Hot Water "Hester :
HOT WATER is so necessary to the health and physical well-being ; of men, women and children on the home front, it is important that ; every Home Owner keep his present water heater operating at top effi-
ciency. . heater is gone beyond repair.
e will find it hard to get another heater now unless his old
Manufacturers of automatic gas water heaters no longer can obtain . the materials to produce for civilian use; some are making heaters for Uncle Sam and our military forces while others are occupied in the
production of armaments, In the meantime, there are several ways in which the homeowner can make sure his present heater will operate best and last longer. There are millions of automatic gas heaters in use as well as the old-style hand-operated heaters. But even the oldest heater will
« give improved hot water service at
decreased cost of operation if it is checked. The American Gas Association offers the following sug- , gestions: $ ” ” »
Automatic Heaters
1. WITH AN AUTOMATIC gas water heater, it is important (for the duration) to have the thermo- - stat set below’ a temperature of 140 degrees F.—especially if the tank is of galvanized iron, because
rust will form less quickly at a lower than at a higher tempera- - ture. Between 120 and 130 degrees F. is considered a satisfactory temperature for general use. 2. The burner of a water heater is easily accessible and should be checked by a plumber or competent authority periodically to keep it clear of dust and sediment which may hamper its efficiency. 3. If the water heater is a storage type, a few quarts of water drained out of the tank at periodic intervals by means of the faucet at the bottom of the heater will prevent sediment from accumulating "in the bottom of the tank and will insure clean water.
4. When using hot water, the
supply at the faucet should be tem-| -
pered by adjusting both hot and cold faucets to get water of the desired temperature; this avoids excess use or waste of hot water and saves heating fuel. ” ” ”
Manual Heaters
THE HAND CONTROLLED gas water heater usually is attached to the range boiler and frequently must be lighted when water is needed, the burner turned off later. . While such a heater cannot be expected to give the degree of service available from an automatic heater, its effectiveness may be increased in several ways: 1. By means of the faucet at bottom of heater, drain the boiler at frequent intervals to remove sludge , and sediment from the tank. 2. The flame should not impinge on the lowest coil, call a plumber or gas company service man to adjust the flame correctly, if needed. 3. When the heater is operated manually, or by hand, it is wasteful to heat more water than is needed: water stored in an uninsulated boiler .cools rapidly. A few minutes planning in regard to hot water needs will save gas and many extra trips to the basement. - 4. When the tank lacks insulation, the hot water service will be improved by covering the tank with a Jacket of corrugated asbestos or ‘+ fibreglas. 5. Clear the flue pipe of the water ‘heater if there is any stuffing of » steel wool or other material.
Ways to Save
WHATEVER THE TYPE of water heater, a check-up should be made of all hot water faucets in the house, for a dripping tap is an added and unnecessary fuel expense and wastes water too. One drop of hot water per second from one faucet will waste more than 65 gallons of water a month and add many cubic feet to the gas bill; whereas a new washer for the dripping faucet ‘costs less than one cent. - It 1s wasteful of hot water and heating fuel to wash the hands under running water; or to wash the dishes under a running stream of hot water; a spray to rinse the dishes uses less hot water and does a better job. It is equally as wasteful to rinse the clothes on wash day with hot water instead of cold. An old-fashioned bath shower fixture may also waste hot water;’ it too should be checked.

The Question Box
Q—We have planted a young hedgerow. There are many dogs in the neighborhood and we wonder if you can give some practical suggestions about how to keep them from getting through and ruining the young plants.
A—A strip of chicken wire, about two feet high, staked up through the center of the hedgerow will keep out the dogs. When the wire has disintegrated the hedge will have grown sufficiently to become a barrier against intruders.
Q—What is the most common bleach for hair? Is it harmful to use occasionally?
A—The most common bleaching mixture is peroxide and ammonia. It is not necessarily harmful, although prolonged use endangers the life and gloss of the hair, and the hair is apt to become streaked.
Q—Should a rubber girdle be dried in the shade or in the sun?
A—To insure longest wear the
girdle should be dried away from
the light.

Let’s sit down at the table with the Joneses and see Just how muciy food they are wasting in an effort to follow the Tules of etiquette.
The kids—and, if the ‘truth were knéwn, even - Mama and Papa—
wotlld like to put some of the rich essence left in ‘the bottom of a serving dish on bread and leave the platter clean. But Mama and Papa have the idea that letting the kids enjoy that nourishing food would. be training them in poor table manners. So, the essence goes to waste. The family has been taught, too, to take a small serving of food whether they intend to eat it or not. It is supposed to be better manners —if not better economy—to take some food and push it around with a fork, so that it looks touched. They've been taught, too, that it.

They might not have to be changed quite so drastically if we got busy and révised our ideas of good table manners enough to make the wasting of food a sign of bad manners rather than of ‘gentile ity. ence in the size of the layers?
A—If you use a 12-inch pan for the larger layers, the other two should be respectively nine and six inches. Larger pans shoyld be in the same proportion.
Q—Do bananas and strawberries combine well for a salad?
A—Yes, and an attractive way to arrange them is to pile large uncapped berries in the center of the salad plate on crisp lettuce, slice the bananas cross ways with a wire bytter or cheese slicer (if you do not have one, use a sharp knife and cut the slices medium thin) and encircle the mound of berries with the banana slices laid so that each slice slightly overlaps the next one.
Q—Is it possible to use honey in place of sugar to make glazed carrots?
A—Certainly. Here’s how it is done: Cook 10 to 12 small carrots in a small amount of boiling salted water for about 15 minutes, or until tender. Melt three tablespoons butter and add one tablespoon brown sugar and two tablespoons of honey. Put the carrots in this and cook over low heat, turning them until well glazed. Arrange them on a dish with the root ends in the center so that they resemble flower petals and cover the center with a goodly amount of fresh green|f parsley.
Q—My little girl put her greasy hands on the new wallpaper in the | living room and left a large grease spot. What will remove it?
A—Apply a paste made by mixing fuller's earth and carbon tetrachloride. Allow it to dry, then brush |} it off. Obstinate spots may require several applications.
