British Social Guidange and ‘Apology.’

By PAUL MANNING Times Special Writer "LONDON, July 16.— : “You FIRST," MY DEAR 'ALPHONSE” “AFTER YOU, MY DEAR GASTON.” While Johnny Doughboy and Tommy Atkins may never get to the “stage of social polish attained by _these legendary Frenchmen, the powers that be are straining to help them avoid such social faux-pas as caused many a free-for-all fracas between al~ lied brothers-in-arms during the first world war. Britains are awaiting: with . interest their © first glimpse of “A Short Guide to Great Britain,” © the new book of etiquet just prepared by the U. 8. war department for the social guidance of . Yanks serving in the’ British Isles. Meanwhile, members of the A. E. F. already here are busy perusing 8 neat little 11-page booklet entitled, “Welcome,” which. the British have published and gre distributing

‘. ‘to U. 8. service men.

London newspapers have been writing glowing stories of the terrific greeting which New York and other American cities have extended to Britons in uniform. F, G. A. Cook, of the London Evening Standard, writes that “a British soldier, sailor or RAF man .. cannot walk the streets of New York . sightseeing for 10 minutes ‘without ! someone getting into conversation with him, offering him a drink or a meal, or an evening at his home in the suburbs, or a run in his car.”

The British Impressed

Such stories have made a profound impression upon the British people, and so it was with almost relief that they greeted the booklet “Welcome,” which is both an ex. ** planation of and an apology for . British hospitality. “Welcome” makes interesting , It tells A. E. F. members: are about to land at a Brit-

i» ish port. If you expect white cliffs

thatched cottages, you will be ted. It will be like most in the world — busy, the Ly is grey, probably a little dé: pe “The real Eng anéthie. England of placid villages ard y towns —lies behind it. So do the Welsh mountains and the Scottish moors. ‘The people will be very glad to'see © you, but their enthusiasm is usually of a rather shy sort and you may not be aware, at first, of tlie warm friendliness they feel toward. you.”

Cowboys Didn't Show Up

Pointing out that the 1917 A. E. F. were the first Americans many Englishmen had ever seen, “Welcome” says “we were a little disappointed that they were not wearing 10-gal-lon hats and cowboy pants. We know a great deal more about you today. “A word or two about conditions . here. Nearly three years of war have made us pretty realistic in our outlook. The gayer side of British life has been subordinated to the . grim business of war. Nearly everybody who is physically able is doing a war job of some sort. : “You may find some of our re- , strictions irksome; we find them so ourselves. If our. trains are sometimes delayed, if there are few porters in the darkened station, or the coaches are not as clean as they might be, we shrug our shoulders ind use a formula which has saved our temper in the most exasperating circumstances: “There’s a war on.’ You will hear the phrase until you're sick of it. We are.

‘We're Glad to See You’

“There is little more to be said except that we are very glad to see you.”

0S Besides tipping Johnny Doughboy

oft how to get along with the Eng- _ lish, tha booklet also includes spe- + gific inf ition on various subjects such as what to do in air raids, what official papers a U. S. service man should carry, Britain's involvetl money system. Of the last, . ‘the booklet apologetically says:

“One of our quaint English cus- |

toms is to make the currency diffieult. You can take it roughly that five shillings (better known as five bob) are equivalent to a dollar. “Watch the half crown and the two. shilling pieces—they’re very similar in size and design, but the half ‘crown is worth 10 cents more.”
