HOW NAZIS WORK IN DUTGH GUIANA
Spies Pose as se as Faneiien Shower Gifts Upon

PARAMARIBO, Surinam, July 14. (By Airmail).~When the Nazi foreign agents began their subversive operations in South America, they applied to Surinam (or Dutch
‘| Guiana) the same general pattern
designed for other parts of the hemisphere. A glance at the prisoners in the Dutch concentration camp reveals a few of the plans that Germany had made for this tropical colony of damp lowlands along the Atlantic coast and mysterious, dark forests in the interior. The case histories on the Germans detained behind barbed wire ‘here tell their own familiar story. One of the Germans now pacing sullenly inside the camp is a trained mariner, supposedly a naval officer. It was he who spent many months painstakingly exploring the various rivers of Surinam: Foot by foot, he made his own soundings of channels, took bearings on approaches to this capital port of 53,000 persons 13 miles up the Surinam river, plotted the location of quays, piers and warehouses.
Posed as Fisherman
His guise was that of a hardworking fisherman. But, strangely enough, he rarely came back from a trip with any fish. Another Nazi prisoner in Dutch custody is believed to be the gestapo agent who had been trained in Germany to be the axis governor of Surinam. He and other agents set themselves up here behind the shield of a trading company and made frequent trips to the native villages up the rivers. They sought to ingratiate themselves with the 17,000 Negroes, descendants of escaped slaves, With the 34,000 Javanese, and with the 41,000 British Indians. They took advantage of the poverty of the interior natives with

They learned the topography and the trails—and they spread always the propaganda message of the Nazis. This intimate knowledge of the rivers and trails. through the incredibly dense jungle was utilized to good advantage when several of the Germans were able to escape from the concentration camp recently. They made such fast time to the Maroni river, looking ,across at French Guiana, that it is cer-
tain their own familiarity withthe
terrain was backed up by more than casual help from the outside.
Had U. S. Uniforms
These German escapees were able to don the tropical khaki uniforms of the United States army shortly after they broke away. The uniforms had been sent to a laundryman by the American troops stationed in Surinam at the Zanderij airfield and at the outposts guarding the bauxite mines. The laundryman merely failed to return several uniforms, saying they had Been mangled in cleaning. At first, the bush Negroes sheltered the escapees in the belief they were Americans on patrol. But, when their suspicions were aroused, they promised to help them in crossing over to French Guiana— and then they informed the Dutch authorities. The Germans were returned to the concentration camp about as quickly as they had fled. The laundryman was already there, a prisoner of war.
MRS. TETER RESIGNS AS ADMINISTRATRIX
' With automobiles and trucks comprising the Hell Driver caravan of
sale ‘in the eastern market, Mrs. Edna Young Teter, the widow, this week resigned as administratrix of the estate. Mr. Teter’s father, Arza Teter, of Noblesville, was named in her place by Judge C. M. Genfry, of Hamilton circuit court, at Noblesville. Bond, which applied to the daredevil’s personal property, was set at $20,000. When the caravan of cars was driven to Philadelphia this week by the stuntmen who took part in the Army Relief show here July 4 and 5, it was planned to sell all of the Teter holdings and gisband the thrill troupe. Mr. Teter was killed in the final performance of the “Cavalcade of Thrills” at the state fair grounds. The equipment was taken to the Hell Drivers’ training grounds, the Langhorne Speedway, near Philadelphia, Pa. Mrs. Teter said the proposed sale of equipment and disbanding of the thrill troupe was by mutual agreement of the estate.

Escape from Escape
‘this week.
Loew’s. “Take a Letter, Darling,” a comedy about a female business executive who falls in love with a lowly artist is flowering at the Indiana. Both are top-notch, the best of the escape cycle which produced such lemons as “Twin Beds” and “Her Cardboard Lover.” Both in one day, however, are a little too much: for me. At the moment, I am thinking in terms of effecting my escape from escape comedies.
Here's a Way
I AM beginning to be in favor of some kind of plan for rationing escape comedies, so that once
in a while it will occur to us that there is a war going on. It is good for us, I should think, to remember about the war occasionally. It’s practically the only escape we get from escape com= edies. . The plan I have in mind to relieve the monotony would permit only one escape comedy per week and it could be shown only at a minimum distance of, say, five miles from another escape comedy. According to my plan, the plot of the escape comedy playing dur= ing any given week must have some slight variation from the plot of the escape comedy billed the following week, such variance to be determined officially by an unbiased jury of experts in the detection of plot differences. Said plot should have a discernable difference from the plot of any escape comedy that might
sanitary zone created pursuant to the aforementioned section of the code, entitled “A Plan for the Liberation of ‘Movie Reviewers and Others From 1, Estage Comedies.” 2
It's Coincidence
AS INDICATED ABOVE, the plots of the two comedies are somewhat similar, Joan Crawford plays the role of a self-contained, cold, businesslike but beautiful brunet in “They All Kissed the Bride” and Rosalind Russell plays the role of a self-contained, cold, businesslike but beautiful brunet in “Take a Letter, Darling.” In the former, Melvyn Douglas takes the part of the suave but struggling hero and in the latter Fred MacMurray takes the part of the suave but struggling hero. He falls for her, but she says nix, business is business. Okay by him. Then she falls for him. Then something happens and they hate one another. That’s good for a while. But it isn‘t so. Underneath they love one ‘ane other.’ Last thing you see, they are rolling off down the highway, looking for a justice of the peace. All right; I know what I'm talking about, because I saw ‘both of them yesterday, one right after the other, and that’s what happens in both of them. There is a difference. I will admit. In “They All Kissed the Bride,” Joan Crawford and Melvyn Douglas drive off in a truck
