TONIGHT “* .9:30-~The' Encmy; WFBM.~-8:00-Jury Trials, WISH. 9:30—Tommy Dorsey, WIRE.

By FRANK WIDNER DRAMA ON the radio has come into its own in the past two years. »_ Almost any night, the story seeker can sit down to a full evening's entertainment. He can tune in on most anything from the lavish shows which use movie plots and movie stars to the highly successful “wild” melodrama. The latter is the most successful on the basis of cost and trouble to produce. Writers are not hard to find, casting problems are simple and they probably draw more listeners per dollar spent than any other form of radio entertainment, with the possible exception of the quiz shows. It would be hard to produce a good comedy or musical program

at the same cost as a “whodunnit.” |

Here are a few of the high spots in the weekly list of melodramas: ‘Mr. District Attorney—According to radio polls, this is the most popular of all, It was listed in the 10 top shows in radio during the past season. There always seems to be just a little more variety in the plot and a little more atmosphere of reality in the dialogue as the “D. A” tracks down criminals a n d brings them gto Justice. Vicki Vola The series invariably has Len Doyle, the “Harrington” in the series; coming to the aid of his chief (Jay Jostyn) or Miss Miller (Vicki Vola) when they get in tight spots. (WIRE, Wednesday, 8:30 p. m.) Inner Sanctum—First started with the idea of putting comedy

(WISH, Sunday, 7:30 p. m.) Crime Doctor—Shrewdly planned, this half-hour program never has gained the audience due its effort. (WFBM, Sunday, 7:30 p. m.) Bulldog Drummond—Here is a program with high class English dialogue and too many musical sequences during the running of the story while the reckless Drummond gets himself into one tight spot after another. (WIBC, Monday, 7:30 p. m.) Famous Jury Trials—Full of courtroom oratory Could be classed as one of the “loudest” on the air with lots of excitement. (WISH, Tuesday, 8 p. m.) The Thin Man—Mr. and Mrs. Nick Charles carry on the good entertainment they provided in the movie versions of this series, although on the radio they get into predicament s three times as bad. Unusual similarity to the voices : of the screen couple (William Powell and Myrna Loy) can be detected in the ra- : 3 dio characters, Les Damon and Claudia Morgan Claudia Morgan. Recently, the series has gone in strong for stories regarding spies and saboteurs, with Nick breaking up this gang and that one. There are some good common-sense talks regarding war bonds after each story, too. (WIRE, Wednesday, 7 p.m). Big Tgwn—One of the most crusading series on the air. Edward G. Robinson, in the role of Steve Wilson, exposes this and that and bolsters Americanism. (WFBM, Thursday, 8:30 p. m.). Gang Busters—Plenty of shooting, tough talk and gore. Taken from actual cases. * (WISH, Friday, 7
