Farnsworth Just Out of the Red,
Then
By ROGER BUDROW
FARNSWORTH TELEVISION AND RADIO CORP. had just pulled out of the red this spring when the government ordered civilian radio manufacturing to stop. Now all its work is for the war and stockholders are told very little ‘about that in the annual report, published today. Farnsworth, organized in 1939, has its plants in Ft. Wayne ahd Marion. In 1939, next year this loss was reduced to $181,000. But this year $10,443,000, and it showed al:
its income was increased to net profit of $642,237. President E. A. Nicholas is somewhat wistful in telling stockholders that, just before the government conversion order, the company was getting itself into a good position in regard to television and phonograph patents, In fact several new civilian lines of Farnsworth radios and phonographs (including t h e Capehart) had been introduced and a big Roger Budrow advertising program was underway to promote these products. Chief optimistic note for the future is that the company’s unfilled orders (not disclosed because of war censorship) “are sufficient to cause the plants to operate at capacity during the major part of this fiscal year.” ”n » ” ' Ingenious substitutes for critical materials were shown in the annual home furnishings market at Chicago. New refrigerators of plywood and plastics have an ice compartment for installing the electrical unit—when the war is over and such units aye made again, Stoves were made partly of wood, sinks made of wood and chinaware and Dutch ovens of fron and Pyrex. Lamp manufacturers, unable to get metals, scoured antique shops, buying up old carriage lamps, fancy coffee and tea pots, even brass cuspidors, to make into lamps. ” ”n ” ODDS AND ENDS: Part of a ~ Turkish train wrecked by the late Lawrence of Arabia in World War I has been salvaged for use on the Palestine railways. . . . Government (ODT) bus restrictions are helping Greyhound by eliminating unprofitable trips and increasing revenue per mile. . . . Oregon will use windshield tax stamps for 1943 license plates. . . . Rubber campaign should keep reclaiming plants busy | m ‘for more than a year. ... A large sterilizing water bag made of treated cotton has been designed to hold drinking water in army
camps.

crease in non-essential industries, ported today.
mid-May to mid-June.
J. Bradley Haight, Indiana director of the employment service, said increases in war production resulted Olin contra-seasonal gains in such industrial groups as the production of machinery, manufacture of transportation equipment, non-ferrous metal manufacturing and. chemical trades. “Evidence of the effect of curtailment of non-essential goods can be seen from contra-seasonal losses in stone, clay and glass products, lumber and allied products,” he said. Of 18 cities where comparable figures are obtainable, 12 showed increases in employment from May to June against five which had increases from April to May. Payroll increases were even more o| favorable, with 13 cities showing increases and one showing none, The April-to-May increase for these same cities showed 10 with larger

BANKS MAY ASK FOR BOMB: INSURANGE
NEW YORK, July 13 (U. P.)— Future mortgage. loans to property owners may contain a clause requiring the mortgagee to take out bombardment insurance as well as fire protection if present plans of mortgage banks materialize, it was
'|learned today.
Many banks are considering changing the form of their mortgage loans to compel property owners to take out such protection and are said to-be basing their action on the language of FHA mortgages,
o| which require the property owner
to insure against “fire and other hazards.” Most banks up to the present have asked property owners to take out bombardment protection regardless of the terms of the mortgages, and there has been much discussion over the right of the banks to do so.

U S. DOMINATES NEW SEGURITY ISSUES
PHILADELPHIA, July 11 (U. P.). —New security issues for cash sale totaled $2,965,000,000 in May, se-
curities and exchange commission statistics revealed today. U. S. government obligations amounted to 95 per cent of the issues. The volume broke February's record, which in turn showed the highest figures since the first world war. Aside from government flotations of $2,809,000,000, new issues continued to be light. Corporate issues of $126,000,000 were higher than April's market. State and municipal offerings dropped to $30,000,000, the lowest level since September, 1939. For the second consecutive month no railroad issues were offered, In-
| dustrial issues of -$104,000,000 ac-
counted for most of the corporate sales, Public utility companies offered $21,000,000, a slight rise but still below the 1942 average to date. Offerings by - financial companies were . less than $1,000,000. The figure excludes investment companies. Almost two-thirds of the $113,000,000 worth of corporate debt issues were placed privately. The 1942 average is 30 per cent, and the 1941 average was 28 per cent. The estimate of net proceeds totaled $124,000,000. The survey covers all new corporate and noncorporate issues for cash reported in the financial press. Issues of $100,000 or less, and debt issues of less than one year maturity are excluded.

They Operate, Call Them. ‘Hoarders.’
By DALE McFEATTERS Times Special Writer PITTSBURGH, July 13.—Nothing irks a scrap-conscious citizen so much as the sight of an overflowing auto graveyard. There are innumerable calls to
| newspapers and government offices |t3 report the hoarding of junked
cars. Frequently the irritation of the
'lindividuals is justified—there still
is hoarding in anticipation of higher prices for parts, and procrastination caused by fear of inability to obtain further stocks of derelicts. But in most cases the auto graveyard operator is doing the best he can, and the war production board is completely familiar with conditions at his yard. Read what the man in charge of WEPB’s auto graveyard section in the Piftsburgh area has to say: “It is hoped that no wrecking yard ever will be without a considerable number of junkers to be scrapped and that the public will not be disappointed to see these yards full of potential scrap iron.”
‘Poor Man's’ Garage’ The official, J. C. Harris, explains:
aim is to have all the available scrap
moved from these yards to steel mills, it is also an important part of the program to encourage auto wreckers to stay in business, purchase additional ‘jalopies’ and again fill up their yards as fast as space is available,” Auto wrecking was an easy-going sort of business until a dire wartime scrap shortage focused the public eye on it. To clear up one popular misconception, wreckers and graveyard operators aren't scrap
«| dealers—at least, they weren’s until
the war forced them into the scrap
1| business. They are dealers in auto
parts—the “poor man’s garage.” They bought old cars and hauled
i{them into a field or lot where cus-
tomers went to buy second-hand parts cheaply—and preferably right off the car so they could see just what they were getting.
WPB Starts Drive
Consequently a particular car might languish in the lot for months before it was finally stripped of
to a scrap dealer, who cut up the chassis into heavy melting steel, pressed the body and fenders into a bundle, and prepared the motor
'|block for foundry scrap.
Auto graveyards were doing business as usual” when somebody awoke to the fact that thousands of tons of valuable scrap were lying
‘| |stagnant in lots throughout the
country, Few could see any reason why millions of junkers disfiguring the landscape could not be imconverted into scrap
s bureau of industrial con-
\|servation set up a graveyard unit
and launched a mass resurrection of old cars. Officials toured wreck-
'|ing yards and ordered operators to “|move their stocks at fair prices or {have the cars requisitioned.
The initial efforts jarred loose thousands of cars, but the campaign ran up against a serious labor problem. Normally a graveyard operation is a two-or three-man job. Operators hadn’t the forces to tear
|| down autos immediately, and said
their earnings weren’t sufficient to hire crews.
Salvage Increased
This problem still remains to be solved. Competent “torchmen” to cut autos to proper sizes with acetylene torches are working in war industries at higher pay, or are in the army. In many cases, steel producers, anxious to get scrap at any cost, have lent their own workers to
|auto wreckers.
Also, too few trucks are available to carry auto carcasses from wrecking yards to scrap yards. Despite these handicaps, the WPB
»|salvage section has stepped up the
yield of auto graveyards to an unexpected level. The industrial conservation bureau estimates that
||more than 383,000 tons of scrap || were shipped from wreckers’ yards
in May, 10 per cent more than April shipments and 100 per cent greater
{than the monthly average in 1941.
Allowed 60 Days
The agency is insisting on a 60day turnover of graveyard scrap,
ly in the field checking on wreckers’ performance. become angered at a graveyard
dl operator for “hoarding,” check him
again in 60 days before you report
| | him.
If the May level of shipments is
4| maintained, auto graveyards will | yield about 4% million tons of scrap
this year. While that appears to be an impressive volume, it is less than the tonnage now consumed by steel mills in one month. . That is one reason why the
?|government is appealing to you to ransack
your cellar, attic and tool-
7|shed for every available piece of
scrap.
