PARAMOUNT’'S FIND of the year is undoubtedly Alan Ladd.

Last year, it was Laird Cregar.

Veronica Lake was found several

years ago and not even bumble-headed promotion can dim out her

talent.

The three, aided somewhat by the presence of Préston Foster,

‘participate in one of the season's best spy-dramas,

AT 10 A. M. yesterday, the line from the hox office of the Circle theater had extended around onto E. Market st. Realizing that there would be a large turnout of Indianapolis “jitterbug” fans, I decided to get there

15 minutes early for the first show to get a seat close to the stage. I did—four rows from the rear. I wanted to see what Kay Kyser had on the ball<why a bespectacled guy with a southern drawl could set a million toes a’tapping and a million faces laughing with the same number of musicians as any other band and a few wisecracks thrown in. It didn’t take long for me to find out. A Master Showman

Kay Kyser is a master showman who can make you laugh and feel at home even when he puts you on the pan, so to speak. For example, when he was calling out numbers to decide who would partake in his “College of Musical Knowledge,” a young lady in the balcony came up with one of the lucky numbers. “Get your shoes on and come on down,” Kay quipped. Or, on another occasion, another lady was a bit slow in reaching the

“Hurmy and get everything hooked up,” he said. “We need you for this show.” . : Mr. Kyser has a wealth of outstanding entertainers in Julie Conway, Trudy Erwin, Dorothy Dunn, Harry Babbitt, “Sassy” Sully Mason and Ish Kabibble. His is one of the finest musicnl organizations to come to Indianapolis in a long time.

ON THE Circle screen this week is “The Man Who Wouldn't Die,” a chiller-diller with comedy thrown in just at the right places. It stars Lloyd Nolar. in a Michael Shayne role, and Marjorie Weaver. ...F. W.

“This Gun for Hire,” which opened at the Indiana yesterday. The picture proves that the old harum scarum can be great entertainment when Hollywood wants to make it that way. Mr. Ladd’s portrayal of a sullen, gutterish, misanthropic gunman, with a hatred for all things living except cats, is one of the most powerful characterizations I've seen this year. ' Miss Lake, whose life doesn’t seem to be worth a dime through half the picture, endures the perils of Pauline with finesse and restraint. She plays the part of a singing lady magician and the only party in the cast who is not trying: to bump her off is her boy friend, palice lieutenant Foster. Abandoning his sinister fat man role, Mr. Cregar develops the part of a flabby, effete, jellyish character. He's in league with the octogenarian boss of a chemical concern, Tully Marshall, who is selling poison gas to the enemy. These unpatriotic operations are abbeted, unwittingly, by killer Ladd who helps out in his nasty way for the sheer joy of murder.

Hot Pursuit DOUBLE-CROSSED by the traitors, the psychopathic Killer goes after flabby Cregar. Tied

up by Cregar’s henchmen to be tossed off the Golden Gate bridge at moonset, Miss Lake is hi-jacked by killer Ladd who wishes to dispose of her in his own way. Hot on the trail, hero "Foster and 500 cops chase the triggerman and captive blond through a gas plant, empty gas mains and into a freight yard. There the killer breaks down and confesses to captive Lake that the beatings, he got as a child from a sadistic aunt and rough treatment in reform school have warped his morals. ‘What happens after that—how the traitors are foiled and how true love triumphs—well, we aren't telling.

“BUTCH MINDS THE BABY,” the Indiana’s second feature, is fair cops and robber comedy, written by Damon Runyon. Brod Crawford is the crook who blows a safe and goes to jail in order to assure the baby’s college education. That’s one way of doing it, “8 » »

At the Lyric

“IN OLD CALIFORNIA” and “Remember Pearl Harbor,” two first run Republic pictures are the Lyric’s offering this week. There's not much to either of them, although the noise and excitement are considerable. i “In Old California” has a good cast: John Wayne, Binnie Barnes and Albert Dekker. As a western, it’s pretty fair going. The story's about the efforts of a young druggist to set up shop in 19th century Sacramento in partnership with Miss Barnes, a cafe entertainer. There is a lot of shootin’, a lot of rootin’ and a lot of tootin’.

happy attempt to cash in at the box-office on the fateful event of Dec. 1.
