AIDS SENATOR

Stimson Praises Lodge in Letter; It Helps His Campaign.

By THOMAS L. STOKES Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, July 10.— High on the list of Republican members of congress whom the administration is anxious to defeat in November because of pre-Pearl harbor iso- + lationism are Rep. Ham Fish (N. Y.) and Senator Henry Cabot Lodge (Mass.). Each, it now develops, has commendatory letters from high-placed officials telling them how much more they are needed in congress than in the army—in which each has served a temporary tour of active duty. They are capitalizing these letters politically in reelection campaigns, Very glowing is the letter in Thomas L. Stokes {he hands of Mr. Lodge, who has just returned from service in Libya. The letter carries the signature of Secretary of War Stimson, a Republican. The ~youthful senator released the letter today. . Democrats tried to hold their tempers, particularly Rep. Joe Casey (D. Mass.), who embodies the hopes of the administration to unseat Senator Lodge. Mr, Casey Tecently announced as a candidate for the Democratic senatorial nomination.

Puts Letter to Work

Rep. Fish got his letter some time ago and is spreading it around in his district. His message to his constituents begins: “As a veteran of the world war and a reserve officer, I would have preferred to have entered our armed forces as a colonel of a combat regiment. “But I have been informed by Lieut. Gen, Leslie J. McNair, commanding general, army ground forces, that on account of my age and ‘with your broad knowledge of military matters and understanding attitude toward the army's problems, you will be of greater service in the halls of congress than with troops in the field.” ” Senator Lodge's communication grows from a recent directive issued by President Roosevelt to the secretaries of war and navy, requiring that members of congress serving in an active status be put on the inactive list after July 1, or after they return to the United States, unless they want to be in active status for the duration.

Was on Active Service

The senator had been on active service as a major in the reserves, first at Camp Benning, Georgia, \ then in Libya. ©. “I was deeply interested,” Secretary Stimson wrote, “in your - sonal report on military’ developments in North Africa. “Your eagerness to continue your military service as a major in the army is easily understood. You ~have rendered fine service as a commissioned officer. “However, at this critical juncture, skilled legislators who fully comprehend the requirements of military service are as important to the army as soldiers in combat. Serve Congress Better “I cannot but feel, therefore, that you will -render more service to the American people by performing the important duties of United States senator, rather than devote your energies solely to the purely military phases of the war as a junior officer.” No candidate for office could ask more than that. That's what comes, some Democrats were grumbling today, from putting a Republican in the cabinet.
