| Red Star Reporters Describe

All Night Battle to’ Death.

MOSCOW, July 10 (U. P.).—The defeat of a German mechanized column in one of the greatest tank-against-tank battles of the war on to Don river front was described today by war correspondents for the newspaper Red Star, Writing from Voronezh, Alexander Poligkov and Anatoly Krivitsky

said that some 600 tanks were in-|

volyed in the all-night battle. The opposing mechanized forces were equally divided, they said, but when the Russians drove the surviving' German forces back, 100 smashed Nazi tanks and thousands of infantrymen remained on the battlefield.

Meet Head-On

The German column began its advance against the Soviet positions on July 4 in a rapid-movement blitz attempt. The Russians permitted the Nazi tanks to come almost face to face with them and then opened a great barrage of frontal fire. During the momentary confusion that ensued in the German ranks, the full mass of Soviet tanks, with the heaviest machines in the lead, came plunging out from the bushes and woods on the German flanks, They withheld their fire until they were only about 180 feet from the enemy, and then they let loose with the withering barrage that opened the tank-to-tank engagement.

Tightly Locked

The fighting was confined to the same spot throughout the night in great entaglement of tanks and troops. The aircraft of neither side

was able to function, so tightly

locked were the opposing units. Toward dawn the Russians began flinging back the Germans. The tank battles continued, the correspondents said, with the fighting slowing at one point and flaring up at another. Almost constantly at least 150 tanks of each side were in the fight. The Tass news agency reported that a fourman tank crew

led by Lieut. Korolov had destroyed

17 German tanks, 10 guns, 22 trench mortars and “several hundred Hitlerites,”” apparently in a single engagement. The fury of that fight indicated it well might have been the same engagement reported by Red Star. _

CHICAGO, July 10 (U. P)— Yes, Junior, Santa Claus will be back this year in spite of the war. But don’t write him for a new bike, or a streamlined electric train because he’ll have only-a few metal toys. The metal which used to make trains, trikes and things for boys is now making guns, tanks and things for soldiers. : Don't worry, Junior, there will be plenty of toys by Christmas, bub they’ll be different. For instance, the toy, game and

The toy manufacturers aren’t worried about providing Santa with a sleigh full of Christmas gifts this year, but they are a little worrjed about 1943. So, Junior, you'd better start be-_ ing good.
