“What I remember best about Indiana is the fish-frys,” Joe Jr. told me when I mentioned his father’s native state. “The Elks club in Evansville used to give them. My dad has lots of friends there, but I haven't been out since the Chicago World’s Fair.” “Was your father born in Evansville or Chicago,” I. asked. “There seems to be a difference of opinion.” “Well, my dad told it to me this way,” he replied smiling. “When he played Evansville he said he was born there. When he played Chicago, he said that was his birthplace. But he always remembered to bring Evansville into his routine in some way or other.”
» ” 2 A LIKEABLE YOUNGSTER Joe Jr. looks like his father. Joe Cook Sr. retired this season because of ill health after 35 years in show business. Born Joseph Lopez, he was adopted by an Evansville family named Cook, after the death of his parents. Joe Jr., who enliséed in the army air corps 17 months ago, is one of several second generation celebrities connected with the army revue. Sergt. Allen Anderson, handsome son of playwright Maxwell Anderson, is stage manager of the show. Pvt., Bob Moore, son of Victor .| Moore, and Pvt, Phil Truex, son of Ernest Truex, appear as Japanese girls’ in a chorus number entitled Aryans Under the Skin. “In one of the sketches we impersonate various stage people enterteining the soldiers at a canteen,” Joe told me. “One private impersonates Gypsy Rose Lee. She personally taught him her routine and lent him her costume, what there is of it. I come in as my dad riding the unicycle and juggling. Spencer Case Sr. who worked as a stooge .for my dad in Topsy Turvy is in the routine. They played in Evansville together. Spencer Jr. is also in the show.” ® = os
JOE JR. SAYS that although people: take it for granted he will follow his’ father as a comedian, dancing is his forte. He'd like a chance to prove himself without having to depend on a line of chatter. “My dad Ty Ait to be a juggler,” he said pulling his khaki cap down over his curly brown hair. “Then once he accidently dropped a club. He made a remark about being the only man who practised and got paid for it. That went over and from then on he was a comedian. Apparently that happens to a lot of jugglers. W. C. Fields, one of my dad’s favorites, began as a juggler. So did my favorite come-
dian, Fred Allen.”
