New Army Air Chief in Hawaii Sees Aleutians
Move As Defensive.
‘By FRANK TREMAINE United Press Staff Correspondent HAWAIIAN AIR FORCE HEADQUARTERS, June 30 (Delayed). —
Japan's thrust into the Aleutian]:
islands probably is defensive, undertaken because of anxiety regarding Russia and a possible United States offensive, Maj. Gen. Willis H. Hale,
commanding the army air force in Hawaii, said today. “The Japanese do not know what
“the Russians may do,” he explained.
“The move into the Aleutians puts them on the Russian flank, in position to strike if the Russians move against them. “Also it is a defense against a possible United States move. “The Japanese are up against a similar situation in Burma, where they have been compelled to continue their drive in an attempt to eliminate possible bases for a united nations offensive.”
Strong Force in Hawaii Gen. Hale, in his first interview
. gince he took over the (command
from his friend, Maj. Gen. Clarence L. Tinker, lost in the Midway island battle, gave a full statement on the
JSituation in his vast operations zone.
Points in his statement were: The primary objectives of the Hawaii air command are first to attain complete co-ordination with other arms of the service and .secondly to get within bombing range
,of the enemy. He cited the Midway
battle as an example of such coordination. The Hawaiian air force never was stronger than it is today and there
is no comparison between its
strength now and that before the Pearl harbor attack last Dec. 7.
Land-Based Planes Essential
A strong land-based air force is essential to the warfare of today. Airplanes can sink battleships and the only thing that can stop the planes is other planes. Dive bombers are excellent offensive weapons against naval forces and ground forces and torpedo planes are excellent against naval units but they need fighter protection. ‘The air defenses of the Hawallan area are being strengthened continually and the raid by United States army planes on Wake island last Saturday is an example of what can be done When the world strategy of the united nations makes Ha-
wail and the Pacific area the fleld!:
of" offensive operations. At 49, Gen. Hale—husky, squareJawed—is one of the youngest men of his rank in the army. A native of Kansas and a graduate of Kansas State Agricultural college, he
Kentered the army through the
\
Philippine constabulary in 1913.

ALLEGED BUND HEAD
CHICAGO, July 2 (U. P.).—Karl Hermann Sautter faced the loss of his American citizenship in federal court today on grounds that he was the Chicago head of the GermanAmerican bund and in sympathy with the Nazi cause when he was naturalized. U. S. District Attorney J. Albert Woll filed the petition for Sautter’s
fidavit attached to the petition and signed by Willard E. Shaffer, F. B. I investigation officer, asserted that Shaeffer was the “duly constituted leader of the German-American bund in Chicago” when he took the oath of allegiance on April 22, 1936. In the summer of 1939, the affidavit said, Sautter made a trip to Germany and advised Nazi officials of his willingness to remain there and work for the German cause. His offer was refused, it said, when the Nazis told Sautter “men like him" were more valuable working in epemy territory.
