A wild throw by relief pitcher Johnny Murphy permitted the winning run to score with one out in the ninth. Singles by Pete Suder and Billy Knickerbocker opened the inning. Pitcher Luman Harris bunted safely and when Murphy heaved wildly to third Suder scored. Joe DiMaggio homered for the Yankees. The Red Sox picked up a game and a half on the Yankees, whipping Washington, 3-2 and 7-1. Three hits and a sacrifice produced the winning run in the first game. Terry pitched hitless ball for the last three innings and took the win. Dobson, aided by four Boston double plays, held the Senators to five hits in the nightcap. Cleveland jumped on Orval Grove for seven runs in the first inning and then coasted to a 7-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. St. Louis climbed to within 2% games of the first division, waliloping Detroit, 12-0. The Browns scored in every inning but one, blasting 14 hits. Elden Auker held the Tigers to five hits for his 10th win. . Ernie White pitched a six-hitter and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-0. It was White's third victory and first since May 25 and trimmed Brooklyn's National league lead to eight games. The Cards collected 10 hits off Ken Heintzelman and Aldon Wilkie, four players garnered a pair of safeties each. Boston’s game at Brooklyn was postponed. Claude Passeau became the first major leaguer to win 12 games this year when he pitched the Chicago Cubs to a 5-2 win over the Reds before 7098 fans in a Cincinnati night game. After three hits netted the Reds two in the first, Passeau yielded only two more safeties tke rest of the way.
