Lewis. : Recommends Brown County Cast.
By RICHARD LEWIS
- I have waited two days for this thing to wear off, but it doesn’t. So 1 guess I can speak my piece. Not ‘a8 Sh ah should be spoken, perhaps, but as well as I can do it. First, T might say that the start in Brown county was particularly bright. The moon was comically lopsided, nudging its way up into the blue-black sky between the waving tree shadows. And the breeze was cool. Inthe wake of the summer wind, @ stillness crept over the grass. The - audience of stars fixed its brilliant # on a point in the universe known as Nashville, Ind. A voice rang out across the stockade: “Get the dogs and kids off the stage, Jean, and let's get started.”
The Bustles Adjusted
A lady adjusted her bustle. And the Brown County Players breathed deeply for the third act (scene 1) rehearsing of “Bertha, the Beautiful Typewriter Girl.” Ha, ha! Does Daniel Desboro Desmond, the unscrupulous banker, “git” the beaufeous Bertha? Will a fate worse than death overtake her? Well, folks, why don’t you all go down to Brown county and find out? It's tomorrow and Saturday nights at 8:30'p. m. It's the first production of the season by the Brown County Players, a dramatic organjzation ' of temporary and permanent Brown county résidents who have taken up with the drama just for the hell of it. Are they good? I'm telling you, they're terrific. Theyre the only little theater outfit I ever saw that doesn’t take itself seriously. * Better start out about 7 p. m. or earlier so you can drive about 40 like Gov. Schricker says and observe the glories of the Indiana countryside of a summer's evening. When you get to the Nashville courthéiise, park somewhere.
Watch for That Sign
Then walk up back of the courthouse to the Nashville community center and there you'll find the stockade theater where the players
-will entertain you with the best
* hillbilly drama to be found in these
United States. Tell you how you can find the eourthouse right off. Soon as you get into town, you'll see a big sign stretched across route 135. It reads:
“THE BROWN COUNTY PLAYERS IN AN OLD FASHIONED “MELODRAMA”—JULY 3 & 4— 130 P. M.—PALISADE THEATER.
4 Got that? All right, then look across the street to your left and chances are you'll see one or two big, brown setter dogs scratching behind their ears on the courthouse lawn, They'll be either Buck and/or Pansy, Sheriff Grover David's dogs. Can’t miss ‘em.
R™ Seems that the players were going |there paints, ‘T guess) and some
to ‘use some chairs from Joshua Bond’s funeral parlor, but they de- - cided that might be a little risky on account of you never know when Joshua is going to have a funeral and need those chairs. So the

em) come from the Nashville and
Helmsburg schools. Mule Advertises Show However, the Players did borrow
"Joshua's mule to advertise the show
around Nashville. Some of the girls rode around on the mule with a big sign. : I might say that Sheriff David's getters, Buck and Pansy, have had kind of a part in the show. During rehearsals, they sometimes trotted [up on the stage and lay down under ‘the table where the Beautiful Bertha sits at her typewriting. / The members of the cast didn’t
; worry much about the dogs and let
“them stay there, occasionally; stooping to pet Buck and/or Pansy in an offhand way as they rehearsed some of the searing scenes which this|
_ mellerdrammer is full of.
One time, stovepipe hat and cutaway coat, who is number two villain in the play, came on stage and he was supposed to say: “Aha! The house is deserted.
. Just right for my dark purpose!”
Or something like that. They Recovel a Hat And there were those two dogs
Br under the table and yawn-
“51
So that’s the way it goes. In the middle of a scene, someone opened the offstage door a crack and reached out on stage with a cane to recover a hat which fell off during an earlier sequence, while the actors continued emoting oblivfous to the hat recovery. . It wasn’t a stunt. -It just happens now and then. Nobody cares because nothing is spoiled. Everybody laughs and the show goes on—as only the Brown County Players can go on. Now, let's meet the folks so youll all be acquainted. FREDERIC WINTER is director. That's why he gets’ his name in capital letters. He’s speech and dramatics prof at Butler university and head of the same departmen® at the Jordan Conservatory here in town. He lives here, but is spend-

put Indiana over its July quota.
Terry Howard, comedienne, and several members of the “All American Sweethearts,” currently appearing in the stage revue, “As Millions Cheer” at Keith's, were to sell war stamps today from the victory booth on the street floor of the Three Sisters, 17 N. Illinois st. The sale is in co-operation with the war bond and stamp drive to help
ing the summer in Brown county. Well, why not be democratic? Let’s put everybody’s name in capital letters. To wit: MABEL CALVIN plays fhe part of Sally Silverthorne, a stenographer. She lives in Nashville and is clerk of the Brown county ration board. what the disposition was of that three-quarters of a tire Brown county was allotted for rationing last January, only I forgot.
MRS, MARY ANN MATTER, as|§ Clarice Claybourne, an adventuress.
I meant to ask her|: -
She resides at Matterhorn as the] Matters call their place near Nash-, ville. -She will be wearing a gor-; geous, green satin dress which was| purchased by an ancestor at L. S. Ayres in 1887.
MARIE POLING, as Blanche Bancroft,’ Bertha’s poor mother. Miss Poling is the telephone operator in Nashville and she knows’ just about everything that goes on in that town. If you ever want to reach any Nashvillite who isn’t at home, just leave the message with Marie and she’ll relay it to them as soon as the party in question
she’ll tell you where they are. CURRY BOHM, as Bridget O’Casey???? Guess who Bridget really turns out to be . . . yowll never, Mr. Bohm is one of the Midwest's best known artists. His work is often displayed with pride at John Herron Institute. I'm telling you, when these Brown countyites go in for the drama, they go all the way, KARL MARTZ, as Glenwood Gaxfield, number two villain. He's the well-known potter and he has his kiln and shop in Nashville. He also does some painting (everybody down
weaving, too. His wife is Becky Brown, who makes ¥rose Becky Brown" buttons. GEORGE TURNER, as Daniel Desboro Desmond, the unscrupulous banker and number one villain. He was formerly clerk of the Nashville house and lives up the road a piece on route 135. George sure plays a powerful villain. CHARLES “FUZZY” WALKER, as Skeets Skinner, the amorous office boy. Puzzy is an I. U. student.
Musical Magic
Charlie Barnes, saxophonist extraordinary, performs strange magic in the Lyric’s lighthearted musical, “Syncopation,” tomorrow.

he hits the stage. Mr. Mills is the former operator of the Whippoorwill Nest, which tire rationing has forced him to close. He used to work at Ayres. Oh, yes! I almost forgot Bertha, the heroine! Well, the folks at Nashville will be looking forward to seeing you under the stars tomorrow and Saturday nights. I guess this is about the most unique entertainment you can find anywhere. And don’t forget to hiss Daniel Desboro Desmond. Hiss-s-s-s-s!
