"Magnifi cent Ambersons'
\
A QUARTER CENTURY ago, a serial was running in the Metropolitan magazine which interested Hoosiers a great deal, for it was
another great story by their favorite author, Booth Tarkington. It.
was “The Magnificent Ambersons” and it was a long serial as serials go.
The first installment began in the December, 1917, issue and the’
last appeared in September, 1918. In October, the serial was published
_ in hook Yorm, in which we have come to know it as one of the greatest of American classics, Now, “The Magnificent Ambersons” has come to the screen. And after seeing a preview of this film, I can report with great pleasure that the magnificence which tharacterized “The Magnificent Ambersons” as ‘a novel also describes the film.

IT 1S A RASH THING to say, ‘but my own feeling about this picture is that it is the finest piece of work to come out of Hollywood in my recollection. I have no hesitation at all in placing it on my list of 10 best ) films of all time. I think it is a much better piece of work than “Citizen Kane,” the
‘initial effort of Orson Welles and
his mercury players. In “Magnificent + Ambersons,” Mr. Welles gives his techniques of photographic realism full play. The results are startling. The players, Tim Holt, Dolores Costello, Anne Baxter and Ray Collins, look, behave and perform like human beings. There is a three-dimensional realness about them which is somewhat breathtaking. This, it seems to me, is cinema art in its highest and best form, compared to which the average, mine-run film production looks a little ridiculous, as the
.silents did after sound came in.
Well, a lot of strings are being pulled around here to- premiere “The Magnificent Ambersons” in Indianapolis where it rightfully belongs. The boys at RKO are hopeful and theyre working hard to get it here, particularly since they, too, have seen the picture and they have gone just as far overboard for.it as I have. " o ”
Music in the Park
FOR SOME time, $I have been harping on outdoor musical enter-
. tainment.| So it give me pleasure
to report that the park department and a group of music-mind-ed citizens have drawn up a series of 11 band concerts, the first of which will be given at’8:15 p. m. Sunday at Garfield park. The music will be provided by the Indianapoliss military band under the direction of George Curtis. There will be a community singing led by Ralph Wright, music director for the public schools, and the P. R. Mallory singers, under Mrs. -Jane Johnson Burroughs’ direction, will sing two patriotic songs, composed locally. + The songs are Iva B. Linebarger's “America, March On and Trust in God” and “Betsy Ross Is Our Sweetheart,” by Mrs. Burroughs and Martin Clinton. In addition, Mabel Van Busum'’s 10-piece accordion ensemble and members of the Footlight club

NEIGHBORHOODS
By Frank Widner
THE GRIPPING STORY OF TWO SISTERS, one selfish and determined, the other quiet and unassuming, is told in the film “In This Our Life” which comes to the neighborhood theaters this week. Bette Davis and Olivia DeHavilland are the two sisters while the male leads are taken by George Brent and Dennis Morgan. In the picture, Miss Davis runs off with her sister's husband
shortly before she is to marry Mr. Brent. The sudden decision eventually leads to the suicide of one of the men and the awakening of a new love for two of the parties concerned. The picture is playing at the Rivoli, Strand, Vogue and Zaring through Saturday and the Irving tomorrow through Sunday. ” n ” GEORGE RAFT turns in another fine performance in “Broadway,” another new picture this week. The picture is made in a “flash back” sequence, with Mr. Raft returning to Broadway and recounting to a night watchman the story of his rise while a hoofer in prohibition days. Janet Blair and Anne Gwynne add considerably to the well
rounded cast. It will be at the :
Belmont, St. Clair and Uptown through Saturday, the Irving tomorrow through Sunday, the Speedway Friday and Saturday,
"the Fountain Square Saturday
through Tuesday, and the Rivoll Sunday through Wednesday. ”» u ” TOMORROW is the day of the “big wind” at the Granada.
