She stayed hidden until the young man locked up, then approached him hesitatingly. | “Sorry, lady, but I just closed,” he told her as she walked up. “1 don’t want any gasoline,” she said, with a smile. “Would ou like to make $50?" “Who wouldn't?” he grinned. “Are you on the level?” “Oh yes, I want te reach San Diego as saan as I can. It’s urgent. Something happened te the car I was riding in. Can yeu drive me there tonight?” “Sure, I'll drive you,” quickly. As they sped down the highway, Judith opened her purse and drew out some bills. “I'll pay you now, in advance,” she told him. If anything went wrong she wanted the boy to have his pay. “Oh, I trust you,” he assured her. But . he took the money and pocketed it. “I should have plenty of time to get you to theecity and be back here by 7 to.epen up.” “Drive as fast as you like,” she said, smiling, “the faster the better. I'm in a hurry, and you seem to be a good driver.” “Sure,” he said, pressing hard on the aeceelerator. “Mem won't ever ride over 30 with me.” Confident in the hoy's driving, she relaxed and dozed a few minutes.
