U.S. FISCAL YEAR

CCC to Liquidate Itself Next Year But NYA

Is Retained.

By DANIEL M. KIDNEY Times Staff Writer WASHINGTON, July 1.—Uncle Sam started the fiscal year today with one less bureau. Congress decided to win the war without the civilian conservation corps.

liquidate itself, however, and a year in which to do so. President Roosevelt had asked for $80,000,000 to keep it going. . At the same time congress allowed $58,049,000 to continue the national youth administration. CCC was created by act of congress. NYA was set up by presidential fiat. Both were depression-

tration sought to continue them as aids to victory. But congress, while retaining NYA, decided that the demand for youth in the armed services, in war-production factories and on the farms was such that CCC should close shop.

CCC Spent $2,700,000,000

Since its creation in 1833, CCC has spent $2,700,000,000. The peak of its operations was reached in 1935 when it had 520,000 enrollees in 2652 camps. First director of CCC was the late

by his assistant, James J. McEntee. Originally operated as an independent organization, it was eventually put under the federal security agency, headed by Paul V. McNutt. Last year the corps obtained a $246,000,000 appropriation, but President Roosevelt froze $95,000,000 of that. Many CCC camps were closed and CCC workers shifted to army camps. This was the work the administration sought to continue. Also forest fighting, for which the U. S. forest service has been given an extra $40,000,000. Supporting a recommendation of its appropriations committee, the house voted 158 to 121 against including $75,818,000 for CCC in the FSA appropriation bill. As the fiscal year began, a $45,-

Egyptian Cotton May Be 'Scorched’

LANCHASHIRE, England, July 1 (U. P). — A huge supply of Egyptian cotton, stored mostly at Alexandria, may be sacrificed under the “scorched earth policy” to prevent it from falling into enemy hands, informed cotton trade quarters said here today. | The supplies, worth an estimated $80,000,000, would be burn up if the German drive into Egypt continues successfully, it was understood. | The Germans, short on all fibre supplies, “would be overjoyed if they could seize several million bales of the world’s most expensive cotton.” _ Because the enemy urgently needs cotton for tire fabrics, gun--cotton and other explosives, local quarters expressed belief that ‘British Egyptian authorities would not hesitate to set fire tc Alexandria’s warehouses if the Germans near that city.
