Wheat Storage Situation Now 3
Is
Better Than Last Spring
By ROGER BUDROW THIS SPRING IT LOOKED AS IF much of our wheat
would have no place to go after harvest.
The agriculture
department and railroads, knowing that we had a two-year supply of the grain on hand, wondered what to do about this
year’s crop.
They and some grain men got together and put on a big drive to have more storage space built and, at the government’s request, adopted a permit system for shipping wheat. Now the word from the AAA is that it looks as if we will get through the harvest all right. It may be a tight squeeze but no wheat should spoil because there is no place to store.
The AAA did a big selling job on farmers, pointing out that Indiana faced a 12-million-bushel shortage of storage space. Since that time, it has appeared that rain, rust and Hessian fly will prospective 22,640,000 - bushel wheat crop. The AAA brought over 700,000 bushels of steel bin space from Illinois. It
reduce our
has ordered wooden bins to store 2,000,000 bushels more. Somewhere between 6 and 7 million bushels of storage space have been added by farmers, which | is precisely what the AAA wanted them to do. Because there will probably be | few places to ship the wheat to] for several months, farmers will have to wait for their money unless | they have taken government loans | and elevators will have to do without their commissions for a while. It will be hard on some, the AAA acknowledges, and some may get panicky trying to move their crops. Shipping can be done only by permit now and no shipping can be done unless there is space at the end of the line for the grain.

A group of Wall Streeters have bought La Consolidada, a Mexican steel company, for about five million dollars, first American money to go into " Mexico since the oil expropriations in 1937. La Consolidada’s original name was Consolidated Steel Co., but the Mexicans couldn't pronounce that name and started calling it “La Consolidada.” So the company changed its name to fit the demand. n ” =

In 1941, combined earnings of the Bell System applicable to the parent company’s capital stock totaled $191,770694 and A. T. & T. paid total dividends of $168,181,146 to its stockholders, maintaining the

Auto Engineer Scrapping
is “vital” to the continued operation of the country’s 32,000,000 vehicles for the duration of the war.
Pointing out that less than 8 per cent of the vehicles now in use are 1942 models, Mr. Roos warned that “if we are deprived of the means of replacing broken or worn out parts on the older model trucks and cars now in use, their mortality rate will be high enough to seriously imperil our war effort.” The tools and dies which would be scrapped under these recently advanced proposals, he said, have only a “very small” worth as salvage, but have an “incalculable” automotive service value.
