Easily Could Fill the Breach By PAUL SCHEFFELS United Press Staff Correspondent baseball bargaining are legion but the swap that sent Johnny Mize to the New York Giants is generally acknowl may cost the St. Louis Cardinals this year’s National league pennant.

than prestige when they went into a sickening tailspin and dropped four out of five to Brooklyn but yes-, terday Billy Southworth’s squad hit a new seasonal low when they lost two games to the seventh-place Boston Braves. The Cardinal Rout The Cardinals scored only three runs in 18 ‘innings against the league’s next-to-weakest club. Mize’s 11 homers and 53 runs batted in almost certainly would have made a difference in the Cards’ current record of six defeats in seven games, a mark that helped put them nine games behind first-place Brooklyn. Jim Tobin, after losing his last seven games, huried Boston to a 6-2 victory in the first game and southpaw Willard Donovan notched his first major league victory, completing the Cardinal rout, 3-1. Tobin 'vielded 11 hits but the Cards’ only runs came on a two-run homer by O'Dea. Paul Waner received his 1000th pass in the sixth inning of the opener. Homers by Chet Ross and Frank Demaree won the nightcap. Demaree stroked his with one on in the fourth and Ross rapped one with none on in the eighth. Donovan issued but one pass and retired the first 14 men in order. Rookie Bert Haas belted a homer in the 10th and gave the Cincinnati Reds a 4-3 triumph over the Giants in the first combination twilightnight game at the Polo Grounds. Babe Barna clouted a homer off Bucky Walters with one on in the fourth giving the Giants a one-run edge. Frank McCormick's four‘bagger with one on tigd the score for the Reds in the eighth. A crowd of 12915 watched Walters go the distance against Hal Schumacher for his eighth victory. He allowed six hits and Schumacher nine. Mize singled twice in four trips and stole a base. Claude Passeau pitched the Chicago Cubs to a four-hit, 3-1 triumph over the Phils before 4309 nightgame spectators at Philadelphia.

by Rip Russel and successive doubles by Jimmy Foxx and Lou Novikoff gave the Bruins two runs, enough to win, in the third.

A’s Blanked Again

Joe DiMaggio, who collected three hits in Tuesday’s night game, cracked out a pair of singles and drove in two runs, leading the New York vankees to a 6-4 win over the St. Louis Browns. Every man in the Yankee lineup but Frankie Crosetti ¢ | hit safely. Marvin Breuer, with the help of Johnny Murphy, won his third decision. Don Gutteridge and ¢| Manager Luke Sewell of St. Louis were ejected after an argument with Umpire George Pipgras. Al Milnar pitched a five-hitter and Cleveland collected 15 blows, drubbing Philadelphia, 9-0, Milnar gave up all his hits in the first three innings and only two men reached base thereafter. Milnar and Les Fleming hit homers. Chicago's White Sox blanked the Washington Senators, 6-0, behind Johnny Humphries’ eight-hit pitching. Tom Turner hit a grand-slam homer for Chicago in the eighth. Ted Williams’ 17th homer gave the Boston Red Sox their third in a row, 1-0, over Detroit in a twilight game before 13,193 at Briggs stadium. Williams’ wallop enabled Charley Wagner to win his seventh victory. Wagner allowed only three hits, retired the side in ‘order for the last seven innings and allowed no runner farther than first. Virgil 1, Trucks gave up eight hits.

Harrie Jones, Leading

Figure in Grand

Circuit Racing, Dies at Rushville Home

RUSHVILLE, Ind, June 25.— Hatrie Jones, in charge of grand circuit racing at the state fair and a leading figure in harness horse racing for many years, died here at his home yesterday. He was about 70. The funeral will be held here at the Wyatt funeral home at 2 p. m. tomorrow, with burial in the Rushville cemetery. A veteran of the light harness ho set, Mr. Jones was at one time known as the “kid driver” of Indiana.

He was a native of Cincinnati and a member of a horse racing family. He came here with his parents, who ran a Rushville hotel. His father, W. A. Jones, also was a horse trainer. At one time the younger Jones had 66 horses under his care.

In 1924 he began being asso- . ‘Kid Driver.

ciated with the administration of harness racing and in 1925 was named assistar® speed superintendent of the Indiana state fair. Later he was made secretary of the Indiana Trotting and Pacing Horse association, and in 1929 was elected secretary-treasurer of the Indianapolis Horse Sale Co. He held both positions at the time of his death. Turf experts believe that a 2:02 mile with ‘George Gano at Ft. Wayne in 1911 was his fastest record. His wife died about a month ago. She would have been the only immediate survivor.

“Lucky” Purnell scored another triumph in a 25-lap feature at the Indianapolis Spéedrome last night as he and other drivers in the Consolidated Speedways circuit entertained more than 4500 enlisted men with a special race card.

Purnell turned the 25-lap route

‘captured third place on the prize list.

Tommy Gray of Dayton, O., was first to receive the checkered flag in the 10-lap class B ‘event. Bill Brereton of San Diego, ‘Cal, Harry Hart of Kansas City, Al Momonee of Toledo and George Scherer of Indianapolis were winners in the 10-lap elimination contests.

JOIN THE NAVY

2000 Recruits Needed!

Navy enlistment is increasing, but speedup in ship production demands heavier enlistment. More men—Many more men-—are needed NOW, to insure trained and seasoned crews for ships now hitting the water. The State’s quota has been doubled. 2000 recruits each month is the goal.

Men 17 to 50 Are Eligible

The Navy has an important—a vitally essential job—for every physically able man between 17 and 51. The experienced machinist, mechanic, electrician, carpenter, radio man and many others with special skills can get petty officer ratings when they enlist, The Navy's construction outfit, the “Seabees,” also offers ratings to men skilled in construction and allied ‘trades. Aviation commissioris can be won through enlistment in “Indianapolis’ Own” Naval Aviation Unit now being formed.

Navy pay rates have been raised. The Navy’s physical requirements have been modified. No selective service board release is required for Navy enlistment, even after a man has received his army induction notice. You can join the Navy now—Today. Official Navy recruiters cannot know all the men who have refrained from volunteering because of confusion ‘or misunderstanding on these points, Civilians who are not qualified for armed service can do their part—and it’s a BIG part—by helping clear up the picture for men who can qualify,

If You Can't Enlist— Get Someone Who Can

If you can't ‘enlist, do the next best thing by getting someone who ‘can. Talk to him. Explain the many advantages which the navy has to offer. Send him to the nearest Navy recruiting office ‘with a personal note of introduction. Bitter still, take him there personally. If every civilian will make himself an unofficial “assistant recruiter,” and get the Navy A Man A Month, we'll reach the goal we must reach.
