Sporting Blood
By Harry Harrison Kroll
CHAPTER NINE AFTER Strickland Ballard had left, Hunter sat on his cot wanting somehow to laugh, much nearer a crying matter. Ballard had come with a vague hope of fastening Hunter. His real reason was to shield poor Juni Because Hunter's motive all had been pretty the same thing, it might seem as if they could get together. The trouble was that Hunter Dent was not quite prepared to carry a crime of which he was innocent to save another who seemed guilty. Whatever Ballard’s call, it took him hastily away. Anderson came for Hunter to talk over the telephone. “Hello,” Hunter said “This is Tracy Hannings I can't be with vou until 10 o'clock. Will} that be time enough?” Okay Wel make en yeh » Don't until I've with you.” Hunter returned to his cell. Anderson obligingly brought the mornThe most interesting | ¢ to Hunter was the dope on the local mystery. The girl, Sarah| Kiker, had been released. The po-| lice would be watching her every] moment to discover her escort the! nicht of the murder. The long-ex-pected break in the ordnance plant scandal came. The elder Ghibardo | had been arrested in the charge of} fraud in the contracts for building the great plant, and his case would | come up in federal court. The First| National, and other local financial] interests, were allegedly involved.| Other financial interests meant] Strickland Ballard, who had his inger in every pie that came along. Perhaps it was this involvement that had taken Ballard away so quickly. Tracy Hannings came at the appointed time. They went over the whole matter, detail by detail “Waive preliminary hearing.” Hannings advised. “T'll get your case before Judge Elkhart by tomorrow, and arrange to get you out on bond —got any friends?” The only person whose name) might be worth the ink it took to! write it is Strickland Ballard’s.” Hannings gave a short laugh swell. it won't hurt you to stay in jail a few weeks anyhow.”

After breakfast the next morning Anderson came to his door. «yisitor.” the sheriff announced. He let Bella Ballard in. “Rattle the door when vou want to leave, Miss Ballard.” he said when he left. “I'll wager you your freedom, terribly as you profess to hate us—" “I never said I hated you.” “_saturated as your evil heart is with a desire for revenge, that in no time at all you will be asking me to marry you, and what's more, I might say yes, and we'd be married!” “Red, will you please run atng?
