USE LUNCHBOX ANDOLD GA OLD CAMERA

‘Then All You Need Is Some Wire, Wood and a Few

Other Items. By FRANK WIDNER

If you have an old folding camera [that is out of date and no longer, {in use, it's a simple job to convert [it into an enlarger that will answer | most of your needs in the darkroom. Here are the materials you need: A drawing board (12x17 inches will do), lunch box, porcelain socket, | six feet of flexible electric wire, plug, | enap switch, No. 211 75-watt milk | white enlarger bulb, two right-angle iron brackets, wood screws for the | brackets, flashed opal glass or { ground glass for diffuser, some nails, | glue, and, of course, the camera. The lumber you will need is: One by 134 -inch! | fir or Bar wood; about eight feet of 3% by 3i-inch white pine, and

1 | some 12-inch plywood. The light housing used for the model is al

high. It will cost you about 25 cents.

Use Glue Whenever Possible

For the best job, glue all the joints and use wood screws in place of the nails whenever possible. The upright should be made from the three-foot length of 21% by 13% - inch lumber. Fasten the 3i-inch square strips to the side§ of the upright in T-beam fashion. This forms a track to support the mov-| able assembly. I | Fasten the T-beam support to | the drawing board base with right-| angled brackets and screws. The! | ne member is built of %-inch | plywood and %-inch strips. It | must fit snugly and at the same time move freely without binding.

How Camera Is Fastened

In order that you might lock the { enlarger head when you move it | into a desired position, fit a knobbed | screw to the lower front end of the | vertical moving member. | The housing and camera support| is built up on a piece of !2-inch/ plyboard, fastened at a right angle’ | to the top of the moving part. Cut an opening in the bottom of the! | lunch-box housing and cover this | opening with diffuser glass. Cut | | another opening in the plywood. | | The camera, with its back off, is; | fastened to this permanently.

Diffused Light Enters Openings

These two openings permit diffused light to pass through the, negative and they must be a trifle! larger than the negative size. Under | the plywood and near the top of the frame incasing the camera, cut a slot for the negative carrier which | is made up of two pieces of glass: hinged together, bound at the edges! {and masked with black scotch ae or lantern slide binder. The porcelain socket and bulb is| mounted in the rear of the lunch | box in a horizontal position in the! end of the lid. The lid can then | be thrown back when you clean! the glass or change the bulb. | Enlargements up to 8x10 and 11x14 can be made from 2%4x2Y% and 21% x% negatives. Smaller size! enlargements can be made by slip- | ping a portrait attachment on the lens. |
