Perry Retires From Tennis Because of Elbow Injury

June 18 (U. NEW YORK, June 18 (U. P)

—The Brooklyn Dodgers and the

red hot St. Louis Cardinals renew their dog fight today in the opener of a five-game series expected to determine the course of the National

league race. Larry French goes to the hill

for the Flatbush Flock and Howie

Krist will toss them up for the Red Birds, who currently trail the Dodgers by 4% games and are riding the crest of a seven-game winning streak. Both pitchers are undefeated, French with four victories and

Krist with three. y Interest is at fever pitch for thi at Tp. m,and &

s modified night game, which starts

reminiscent of last season's stirring stretch duel. The

Cards are closer to the Dodgers than they have been for six weeks and draw confidence from the fact they won three of the four games played against “dem Bums” thus far this season. Mort Cooper, ace of the Cardinal mound staff, scored his eighth triumph yesterday, hurling St. Louis to its seventh win in a row. He handed the New York Giants a 3-0 shutout, allowing five hits. Cooper also got two hits as Cliff Melton and Ace Adams allowed nine safeties, including a homer by George Kurowski. Kirby Higbe handcuffed the Chicago Cubs and the Dodgers regained their winning form with a 5-1 triumph. It was Higbe's fourth straight and sixth win of the season. He yielded only four safeties.

Dolph Camilli laced his 10th homer assault on Big Bill Lee.

That wasnt surprising to those on the Forest Hill golf course in, New Jersey some days ago. There was a time when Jones and Ruth had to fight their way through milling thousands of hero worshipers, whether they liked it or not; but in those days they had a different character of competition. Movie stars weren't playing golf as public attractions,

It was the only thing newsworthy that happened out here yesterday, anyway. Except maybe for the long sour faces the golfing fathers wore; the dear fellows do not like these little gaudy didoes one bit. It just isn’t being done, you know. Golf is golf and showmanship is something else— even when funds for the service must be raised.
