Now the Public's Talking
vv
TWO WEEKS AGO, I advertised for opinions on a series of topical
questions which the movie industry is asking newspaper and magazine
critics.
I thought the movie-going public would know the score. It did
I thought I knew the score, too. Ididn't The questions were drawn up by Film Daily, trade paper of the Industry, and they looked deceivingly easy. I had intended to pass on
a digest of the opinion to the trade paper. but first I'm going to detour it through this column, because some of the answers are worth reading. While I take the liberty of printing the opinions, however, I ghall not disclose names because some writers wished to have their remarks treated anonymously. So here goes: =
| De; | Don't MOST VIGOROUS discussion centered about the question: “As 2 war time measure, would audiences in Indianapolis favor the abolition of double features?” A-1: “If anvthing on earth gbolishes the double feature, it will earn the undying gratitude of seven-eighths of us, at least.” A-2: “Positively no cutting down on double features. Most of the time, one or the other is rotten and if we tolerate at least one picture, time and money will not have been spent in vain.” A-3: “For heavens sake yes.” A-4: “I don't favor the abolition of double features.” A-3: “Speaking for my friends and family, kill them before they kill us.” A-8: “Speaking for my neighbors and friends, no. We want double features.” ” >
War vs. Escapism QUESTION: “Do film audiences in Indianapolis prefer pictures with war themes—or do you think that they incline to pictures of simon-pure escapism?” A-1: “I don't like war pictures. I prefer comedy drama or trag.edy. I don't like propaganda pictures that hand you a canned opinion.” A-2: “TI think we ought to have more war pictures.” A-3: “Half and half.” A-4: “Prefer escapism.” A-3: “Prefer war pictures.” A-6: “A war picture once in a while is all right, but whenever producers get started on a certain type of picture they just keep going. Monotonous, isn't it?” A-7: “People do not favor war pictures with war themes.” » » 8
' War Themes QUESTION: “What changes, if any, in the treatment of war themes by Hollywood producers would you suggest?” A-1: “Stop the idiotie practice of presenting all enemies and villains as fools, doits, smartglecks and cowards to be sneered at. Underestimating the courage, gtrength, cunning and determination of the enemy has been the most deplorable feature of Amerfean Aims, English films have shown the enemy as something formidable. And why not? It

“Many critics rehave siressed the sereen’s need of new talent. In your opinion, are film companies bringing forward and building new mames’ with sufficient speed and exploitation?” A-1: “Yes, too fast. The stage fs wiser than the screen when it keeps stars going on for years, knowing well that audiences love their favorites and want to see them in different roles.” A-2: “No A-3: “Yes, demands it.” A-4: “We certainly need new talent . . . why is it foreign stars re forced on us when there are plenty of talent in our own country?” A-3: “No. That's foreign stars.” A-6: “Theyre bringing stars up too fast. are terrible and they all look alike.”

Recitals at Jordan Set
200 to Take Part in Series This Week.
Two hundred students of speech, dance and piano will take part in recitals precented by the Jordan Conservatory of Music this week. Because so many families will remain at home this summer, the conservatory will continue its recital presentations throughout the summer months.
What Price Stardom?
QUESTION: “Which of the newer screen faces do you think rate eventual stardom because of their performances in recent pictures?” A-1: “None.” A-2-3-4 and 5: “Teresa Wright, Bonita Granville, Glynis Johns, Roddy McDowell, Laird Cregar, Michelle Morgan, Paul Henreid, Van Heflin, Alan Ladd, Marsha Hunt and Baby Sandy.” 2 = = QUESTION: “Is radio a formidable competitive medium to the seéreen in Indianapolis?” A-1: “Yes.”
-2: “No.” 3: “Yes it certainly is -4: “I don’t think so.” -3: 6 7 8
"It is.” “No.” “Yes and no.” “It can never compete until television comes.” g = =
Film Need
QUESTION: “What do you consider the most urgent need today of the motion picture in=dustry?” A-1: “Better stories and different plots or at least different presentations of old ones.” A-2: “To stop treating the public like 8-year-olds.” A-3: “Recognize that the public is not composed entirely of morons.” A-4: “Raise the standard of screen entertainment. We're not gtupid.” A535: A-6: A-T: tures.” A-8: “The greatest need of the motion picture industry today is
to get wise to itself.” = =
My Conclusion SC THERE it is. Space did not permit running all the answers to all the questions. Having put a finger on the public pulse I can now reveal without any fear of being disproved that the score on these questions is: Fifty-fifty, yea and nay and pro and eon. Boy, am I confused!

Bob Hope
HOLLYWOOD, June 15 (U. P.). — Comedian Bob Hope sought $1425 today in a court action against Mr. and Mrs. F. James Hope, his brother and sister-in-law. The suit was filed in reply to one brought against Hope in behalf of his sister-in-law, who asked $2000 for secretarial serve ices. Mrs. Hope's suit was filed through an assignee and her name was not revealed until Hope's counter-action was filed. The comedian’s petition said he had advanced his brother and sister-in-law $1425 which had not been repaid.

Home Defense Bulletin
From Marion eotinty and Indianapolis offices of civilian defense, World Way memorial, 431 N. Meridian st,
Control center reports many questions as to uniforms for defense and first aid workers. We are sorry to say that they include no gold praid or beautiful insignia. The badge of the worker is work, You will find the men and women who make up this organization spending hours of work in training schools, or with their neighbors, to be of help to others. Their big parade will come during and after the first air raid. You will have no trouble then in distinguishing them from those who have not been trained.
