WAR-TIME RACKETS ARE FLOURISHING. Smooth im rar
fakers are taking advantage of patriotism, rationing and
shortages to gyp the public.
Even the old “fabulous oil field” racket has been hauled |4m Inter
out of the moth balls and pulled on unsuspecting investors who are told they can “clean up” because of the gasoline in
shortage in the east. The racketeers follow the news closely. Right now schemes are being tried for getting money to finance “a new synthetic rubber.” And some promoters are claiming they have bought” up some low-grade ore mines at a bargain, and with government subsidies, will be able to “make a killing” provided they can get some capital to get started. Some “contact men” offer to get a manufacturer a war contract—for a fee. Likewise they will find scarce materials for him “from a friend.” The Better Business Bureau sent out a list the other day of 22 other “war gyps,” half of which had been tried here. Among these were the fakers who offered to test and refill fire extinguishers at a low price; furnace repair men who wanted to “fix the furnace for air raids” at a fancy price; swindlers who organized phony charities and benefits for refugees and service men. “Absolutely worthlesss” retreaded tires have been sold or bootlegged. “Official” service flags have been offered, despite the fact the army and navy have no official flags. War bonds and stamps have been used in gyp schemes. Out-of-town concerns have sold “watered” paint. Worthless seeds, bulbs and shrubs have been sold under the “food for freedom” guise. Memberships in “patriotic” organizations have been | gold. There are offers of ‘“specially] tested sand” for incendiary bombs and cases of phony air raid wardens selling fire extinguishers. The list could €o on for columns. Some of the offers are legitimate but many are not. About the best thing to do is use plenty of skepticism and when in doubt, check with the Better Business Bureau.

Rep. Wilson, Citing Indiana Purchase, Asks Better
Sacrifice Pattern.
By DANIEL M. KIDNEY Times Staff Writer WASHINGTON, June 13.—Failure of Washington residents to fill their quota of war bonds and savings during May was cited by Rep. Earl Wilson (R. Ind.) today as an example of local citizens imitating the administration in “refusing to establish a pattern of sacrifice.” “The administration has refused to abolish a bureau, so the citizens of Washington probably feel that the need for their money isn’t so pressing,” Rep. Wilson asserted. He roundly condemned this attitude and urged that congress establish the sacrificial leadership] since the administration refuses to do so in his opinion.
