Indiana Refrigerator Maker

Price Ruling

By ROGER BUDROW

IN ONE BIG SWOOP, the government froze prices, realizing full well that hundreds of exceptions would have

to be granted. But as OPA chief Leon Henderson said, “We A

had to start somewhere.”

One of the complications of price-freezing, or to be more| in

exact, price-ceiling, was that run into by Sunbeam Electric Manufacturing Co., one of the biggest firms at Evansville,

Ind.

Sunbeam made refrigerators just for Sears, Roebuck. This big mailorder house, in turn, sold them to the public. Sunbeam did not sell directly to the public at all. Now it is allowed to sell refrigerators only to those who have a preference rating from the WPB which means only those guarding the public health and welfare, not the general public. Roget Badrow Never having had a retail price, the March ceiling order did not apply to Sunbeam. So the company had to apply for a special ruling on its case. The ruling, just issued, allows the company to charge a price which covers its cost of production and allows for a reasonable profit, provided the administrative cost is in line with that which the company had last December.

WHERE BUSINESS WAS NOT SO GOOD

This statistical map, just published by the state welfare department, shows the areas where public gid was the heaviest, as of the first of this year. In worst shape was Vermillion county (Clinton)

third person was getting some form |

of public help—WPA, direct relief, etc. The shaded areas comprise what is called the “coal-mining belt.” Location of huge war plants in this district is expected to improve conditions considerably. The big industrial areas—the factory counfies along Lake Michigan, northeastern counties and Indianapolis (Marion county) —busy on war work, have very little need for public aid. = * » ODDS AND ENDS: The U. S. employment service is trying to get high school and college students to register for farm work, even inexperienced city-bred youths who may be needed to pick fruit, berry and vegetable crops. . . . Likewise the employment service is trying to get farmers to let it know how many workers they will need.

There may be a drive to salvage old |

pianos for iran, brass and steel. . .. Paper shortage boomerang: Retail stores eliminated paper bags and some wrappings, cutting sales of paper companies when there isn't a shortage anymore. . . . Mayor LaGuardia is trying to get more war business for New York City where unemployment is still considerable. « « « “Brass” eagles for flagpoles are now made of a plastic. . . . Weekly carioading figures of railroads no | longer tell the whole story because

TRADERS NERVOUS OVER GRAIN BILL

CHICAGO, June 12 (U. P).— Wheat and rye futures firmed in early dealings on the board of trade today. Oats were steady, but corn and soybean futures irregular, At the end of the first hour, wheat was 1% to 3% cents a bushel higher; corn % higher to % lower;

The Senate-house deadlock over

wheat for food and a growing congressional movement for 100 per cent of parity loans affected nervous price movements. The possibility of a presidential veto of a farm bill without the below-parity provision brought about weakness in corn, oats and rye futures near the opening for fear of competition of government wheat in the feed markets.
