When the United States and Britain asked Finland to a separate peace with Russia last August, the Finnish minister here, Hijalmar Procope, asked the state department two questions: First. in view of the experience Finland has had with the Soviet Union in 1939, what guarantees would Great Britain or the United States offer Finland that any peace treaty which the Soviet Union might now be disposed to negotiate would be maintained? Second, what assurance would Finland be given that—in the event Germany was defeated and the Soviet Union became the predominant military power—Russia would respect any promises which Britain or America might have made, or any promise that she would not again try to invade Finland?

. Senate Committee Seeks to Influence Navy in

Solving Menace.

WASHINGTON, June 11 (U, P). —Members of the special senate committee investigating the war program sought today to influence the navy in favor of a “screen of small boats” to protect Atlantic coast shipping against submarines. Members who questioned Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox for two hours yesterday learned that the navy has “made progress” in its anti-submarine warfare to the extent that no sinkings have occurred within 50 miles of the Atlantic coast for the last two weeks. Several members indicated that they did not consider that sufficient and contrasted the situation facing the Atlantic seaboard with that around the British isles, where there have been no sinkings for a year.

Knox Is Cautious

Secretary Knox discussed the sub{marine situation with a subcommit{tee headed by Senator Harley M. Kilgore (D. W. Va.) after having refused recently to appear before{ST the senate naval affairs committee on the ground that military secrets were involved. | After his appearance he cautioned reporters not to quote him as saying that the submarine menace is

EXPECT MORE JAP BLOWS AT ALASK

WASHINGTON, June 11 (U, P).| —Military and naval sources, scof-| fing at Japanese claims of troop landings in the Aleutian islands, today believed the Japanese probably would try more hit-and-run raids in the Alaskan area. Those sources indicated that all was quiet in the Alaskan area for the present, but emphasized “for the present.” They have not ruled out | the possibility of further attacks such as that on Dutch Harbor a week ago yesterday.

NEED CITED FOR “MORE CARRIERS

Rep. Magnuson, Back From

Speed in Building.

WASHINGTON, June 11 (U. PJ. —More and more aircraft carriers are what it takes to lick the Japanese, Rep. Warren R. Magnuson (D. Wash.) reported today after a six-month tour of active service with the navy in the Pacific. Rep. Magnuson, who was a lientenant cdmmander attached to task forces that raided Japan's Marcus island and Japanese-occupied Wake island, declared that more aircraft carriers must be built, and built fast, to locate and smash the Japanese. | “Every time we've gotten to them with anything like equal strength we've done all right.” he said. “There's no doubt in my mind but that aircraft carriers are far and away the most important combat vessels in modern naval warfare. Submarines are important, too, and we must have the necessary cruisers and destroyers for complements, but in the final analysis the aircraft carriers will tell the tale.” Rep. Magnuson added that if the United States could muster 50 aircraft carriers at this time to seek out and attack the Japanese fleet, it could make short work of theca Pacific war.
