control on eight hits. Harlond Clift's homer with one on was the Browns’ big punch. The Yankees, as usual, kept rolling. They piled up eight run on luckless Edgar Smith, year’s most consistent loser, in the second inning and beat the White Sox easily, 8-2. It was Smith's ninth straight loss. Joe Gordon had a single and double and was robbed of another hit by Third Baseman Bob Kennedy. It was the 20th straight game in which Gordon has hit safely. Les Fleming's double with two on and two out in the ninth enabled Cleveland to beat the Red Sox, 4-2. Oscar Judd held the Tribe to three hits until the ninth when he allowed two more and two walks which beat him. Jim Bagby gave up nine hits in beating his former mates for his seventh victory. A fast finish by the Tigers gave them an 8-7 victory over the Athletics. Don Ross’ homer with two on in the eighth tied the score, 4-4, but the Tigers needed four more runs in the ninth to win. Ned Harris hit a homer with one on in the ninth and Birdie Tebbetts singled with the bases loaded.

The Browns weren't overloaded with pitching prospects this spring but Sewell has Eldon Auker, John Niggeling and Al Hollingsworth | pitching winning ball and there are some hopes that Bob Muncrief will come around soon. Last week's deal which brought Catcher Frankie | Hayes to the Browns has improved the club's punch. The league is raving about rookie |Shortstop Vernon Stephens, who lis not only a classy fielder but has |considerable power. Jimmy Dykes, White Sox pilot, rates Stephens over the Red Sox's highly-touted rookie Shortstop Johnny Pesky.

World Events Won't Keep Tim From Trying Freeman's Catfish
By TIM TIPPETT
IN EXACTLY 11 days the fishing season opens. hours our vacation begins. At this moment our little man Friday is preparing for June 16 by scraping last year's mud off our casting rod and rubbing down our lines with the family's supply of paraffin, For a week now he has pored over road maps and charted fishing trips that look like a 1928 Cook's tour. We've kept the him and all he listens to on the radio is Amos 'n’ Andy. It's going to be a blow when we tell him about the tire situation and all this gas rationing talk. But world events aren't going to keep us from using those two weeks out of the 52 in each of our years from getting mosquito bitten and deer fly “chomped” on some river flat. Walk we will, if we must, to the nearest sandpit, lake, river or stream and for nine days we're going to catch catfish and after that we're going to use all the advice we've been giving you on how to out-fox the game fish. One of the places we're going to is up Road 39 to Freeman lake and see if it’s true what we hear about the catfish biting there. Then we're going on up to Shafer. We understand that Shafer is simply with catfish and carp. Both lakes are teeming with bank and channel cats and in some of the muddy bays bullheads are crowding each other up on the | banks. Then along White river we'll unlimber our heavy lines and make a try for carp. It's reported that the high waters this spring caused quite a migration of those overgrown goldfish and we'd like to see for ourselves. Friday tells us that all the driftwood that made fishing impossible around Columbus has been washed away. That's another must. The trout season isn't over until
