RECORD SET IN BUILDING SHIPS
American Yards Finished]
58 in May, Just Ahead Of Month's Sub Toll.
WASHINGTON, June 8 (U. P).— American yards are building ships today at the fastest rate in history, and just got ahead of submarine sinkings in May. The maritime commission announced that American yards set 1 new world's record by delivering 58 ships into service during May. No other nation, including the United States, ever had built as many ships in one month. While the yards were stepping up production to the record rate during May, 57 ships were reported to have been sunk by submarines off the American coasts in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Most of the sinkings were anwounced by the navy department. Ships delivered in May included 43 liberty freighters, three tankers, three standard design commission ships and nine liberty-type freighters for the British. American shinvards also launched 65 ships and laid keels for an additional 75 in May. Pacific other
