CHUNGKING, June 4 (U. P)— Six Britons convicted by court martial of espionage against the Japanese army have been sentenced to prison terms in Shanghai, central news agency reported yesterday. The sentences ranged from 18 months to five years. William James Gande, 57, manager of the Gande Rice Co. and vice chief of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps was sentenced to five years.

But this is a fine city in which to ramble. Dozens of side streets twist and turn off the main avenues and a few steps from a modern district you are adrift in a drowsy old quarter, sauntering past weather-stained little churches. Here urchins chase each other across cobblestones. A wizened old man sits on a doorstep, basking in the sun. In another square, a florist’s shop has a steady flow of customers. There are lilacs, big bunches of tulips, forget-me-nots, rose bushes with buds just swelling to the bursting point, and any quantity of potted plants. It is true, there are drab streets, drab houses and the city’s architecture is an extraordinary potpourri of charm, ugliness, beauty and mediocrity. But life blows along Moscow's streets with a warm and steady flow. No Undue Haste

On these broad thoroughfares, motor cars alone dash along at a speedy pace and with so much space that the streets never appear crowded. Somehow, this heightens the impression of a great metropolis where life pulses with a curiously measured beat, yet never with undue haste. Summer has come to Moscow and, with the sun-gilded air, men, women and children seem to breathe with an indefinable but all-pervading content. As I come back within sight of the Kremlin's star-topped spires, beyond Revolution square, it occurs to me that there is a strange aspect of this pleasant midday walk through the heart of Moscow. In an hour’s ramble, I have encountered only three reminders of war —a large limousine with a Red Cross painted on its sides, one soldier with his arm in a sling, and the nose of an anti-air raid blimp peeking out from under the trees in a park. That surprises you? Well, Moscow does.

Nazis May Ban French Anthem

STOCKHOLM, June 4 (U. P)). —The newspaper Allehanda’s Berlin correspondent reported today that the Germans were thinking

about banning the Marseillaise, the French national anthem, because its words were not representative of the “French national revolution.” The chorus of the Marseillaise is: “To arms! brave! The avenging sword unsheathe! March on! March on! All hearts resolved On victory or on death!”

The correspondent said, however, that a Nazi-controlled French newspaper had suggested the melody be retained because it was a “musical masterpiece,” and that new words, expressing “the new French spirit,” be devised.
