THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES ‘Jerry’ Liddy Retires as Head of Union Rail Station
John Jeremiah Liddy is going to call it a day—for keeps—next Monday at Union station. He's 70 and so he’s retiring as superintendent there. W. H. MecKitrick, at present station master and general baggage agent, will take over. Mr. McKitrick has been employed by the Union railway in various capacities since 1905. F. N. Reynolds, chief cperating officer of the Indianapolis Union and Belt railway, made the announcement. . John Jeremiah Liddy, of course, isn’t known exactly as that. His friends—and there are plenty of them—know him as “Jerry” Liddy. But John Jeremiah is really his name, for he’s Irish. He came to Indianapolis as assistant general yardmaster for the Pennsylvania railroad in 1902 and in 1909 he became trainmaster for the Union railway. On Jan. 1, 1936, he was appointed Union station superintendent. But it’s not only as a railroad man that Mr. Liddy is known. He's got the Irish twinkle in his eye and the Irish wit on his tongue and for 52 years he’s been a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He's serving his fourth term as president of the state organization. And Mr. Liddy knows some highup Irishmen—Jim Farley, for one. It’s been the same way, too, with Rep. Louis Ludlow, the late Senator Albert J. Beveridge, the late James P. Goodrich, former Indiana governor, and the former U. S. senator, James E. Watson.

SUSPENDED FOR BOOSTING GRADE
Police Corporal Also Is Demoted After Hearing By Safety Board.
James Hasch, a corporal in the police department, has been demoted. to patrolman and suspended for 60 days for changing a police candidate’s merit board examina-
tion. Mr. Hasch pleaded guilty, before the safety board yesterday, of changing the examination grade of George E. Young from a failing i { if to a passing “82.” «I changed the grade and immediately afterwards I knew I should not have done it,” he told the board. Witnesses testified that he told his superior officer about it a few minutes after the substitution. He said that at the time he thought he was helping a friend of his brother-in-law. A change in the method of conducting merit board examinations resulted from the trial. Heretofore, members of the police and fire deThe

QUOTA INCREASED
Indiana’s quota of new passenger automobiles was raised to 1481 for June, State OPA Administrator James D. Strickland announced today. The qouta for the months of
March, April and May averaged 11323. Eligible buyers for the new |cars are the same as those eligible to buy retreads or new tires and must show not only their eligibility but also their need before obtaining a permit, Mr. Strickland said.
Somebody asked Mr. Liddy what he was going to do now that he would have time on his hands. “Why, I may plan a foraging expedition to Australia to help Gen. MacArthur,” he replied. That's the Irish in him.
