mployment Doubled The company now employs 130,000 persons, twice as many as it did | in 1939. One of the most important jobs is turning out turbo-electric equipment for the country’s power plants. This year’s output will be about 3,000,000 horsepower, and this equipment installed in new plants, together with inter-connecting circuits so power may be exchanged between sections of the country and consumption spread, wil! give the nation 10 per cent more electric power. Newspapermen visiting the plants under the auspices of the National Association of Manufacturers, saw huge pieces of equipment for Shasta, Boulder and Bonneville dams. The laregst single generator had a capacity of 85.000 kilowatts, or approximately 75,000 horsepower. -It was almost as big as a house.

Energy Piped Among other things che correspondent saw were huge, 60-inch searchlights that throw 800,000,000 candlepower beams, and 1,000,000,volt X-ray tubes capable of penetrating four inches of steel in a few minutes and recording flaws sterescopically so they may be repaired promptly. The tube does in three minutes what it requires a 400,000volt tube three hours to do. Engineers said the war was stimulating scientific research, and that

many changes in the uses of electricity. They expected, for instance, that present radio receivers would be outmoded by color televisions, and that new safety devices for aerial and naval navigaton would be used. Dr. W. R. G. Baker, vice president in charge of radio and television, said high frequency electrical energy may be piped instead of wired. “You can squirt energy out of the end of a pipe, the same as you squirt Wel he he a
