Pitchers Getting Better; Last 400 Hitter Leaves

By GEORGE KIRKSEY United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, May 26 —The pitchers are beginning to catch up with the hitters in the major leagues. The last .400 hitter has passed out of the picture in the averages and it’s getting more dificult with the passing

of each day to get a base-hit.

of the honors. The returns show: Only one team scored in double figures. (The Cardinals with 10 runs.) Only four homers were hit in eight games, two in each league.

Only three teams hit in double|

figures. The Cards got 13 hits, the White Sox (how did they do it?), 12, and the Browns, 10. All the rest were pretty much under the pitcher's thumb. Curt Davis, Dodger veteran, fashfoned the best pitching performance—a two-hit 3-0 shutout over the Phils. Four other clubs were held to one-run.

- Yanks Increase Lead.

The Yankees did themselves the most good by increasing their American league lead to three and and a half games with a 3-1 tri-

fifth straight loss. Spud Chandler gave up seven hits and was aided

by three Yankee double plays, mak- |<

ing the world’s champs’ total 50 in 34 games. Joe Gorden hit safely in his tenth straight game and Buddy Hassett drove in two runs and scored the other. . Chubby Dean, Indians’ lefty, and Bill Dietrich, White Sox bespectacled right-hander, were locked in a 1-1 pitching duel until the ninth when Dean faltered. The White Sox cracked out four hits and scored four runs, winning, 5-1. Sid Hudson outdueled Phil Marchildon last night before 11,507 at’ Philadelphia as the Senators beat the Athletics, 5-3. Hudson gave up nine hits but had the A's blanked until the eighth, when he enjoyed a five-run lead. Marchildon’s wildness and poor support contributed to his defeat.

Brooklyn Coasts

The St. Louis Browns nosed out Detroit, 3-2, on a costly Tiger error in the ninth. Hal Newhouser held the Browns to four hits until the eighth. Bob Muncrief allowed only four hits in the eight innings he worked but two of them were homers by Jimmy Bloodworth and Pinky Higgins. Brooklyn coasted to a 3-0 victory over the Phils in a twilight game| in which Curt Davis came close to a no-hitter. One of the two hits off him was of the infield variety and Dixie Walker just missed catching the other. Mickey Owen’s triple drove in two runs. The Braves subdued the Giants, 3-1, in 11 innings when Max West hit a homer off Bill Lohrman with a mate on. Lou (Dry) Tost was the winning pitcher, allowing only eight hits. I.ohrman also allowed eight hits, but from the fifth until the 11th was invincible.

F. McCormick Misses Game

Cincinnati moved into fourth place last night by downing Pittsburgh, 6-1, behind Paul Derringer’s six-hit pitching. A crowd of 16,205 saw the first night game at Cincinnati. Derringer got a single and double to help win his own game— his first victory this season. Frank McCormick, Reds’ first baseman, broke his string of 652 consecutive games when he didn’t play because of a lame back. Rookie Hank Sauer replaced him. The Cardinals raked five Cubs for 13 hits and notched a 10-2 victory behind Ernie. White's easy eight-hit pitching. Terry Moore banged out three hits.

Yesterday’s Star—Curt Davis, Brooklyn veteran, who toyed with the Phils as he pitched a two-hit game for his sixth victory.

Speedway Cards Softball Derby

John Devney, softball commissioner for southern Indiana, has scheduled another Softball Derby for Speedway stadium starting Saturday night and continuing until June 2, E. C. Atkins, recent winner of the first derby, Allison Patrol and Wayne Park Garage have entered, Strong state teams must have their

456 Pass Hale

America Test

By UNITED PRESS The Hale America tournament, golf’s greatest contribution to national war charities, had a total of 456 qualifiers Monday for berths in the 13 sectional semi-final rounds which reward survivors with spots in the finals at Chicago, June 18-21. This group, which qualified from a record open field of over 1528 golfers, will be joined by 12 Californians, who moved up automatically” because of lack of competition, and 62 more who were exempted because they qualified for the P. G. A. tournament now under way at Atlantic City, N. J. “Name” casualties were few in which

—for 36 holes—go to an apparently unknown amateur, Edward Johnson, from Fairmont, W. Va. who

registered 132. The only entry in

his district, Johnson was aided apparently by the lack of competition for the one berth in his area. He shot the first 18 holes in 67 and then toured the back 18 in 65. Reggie Spencer, professional from Fairmont, withdrew because of illness.

Al Espinosa Eliminated

Buck White of Memphis, Tenn., turned in the next best score to lead qualifiers in his district by nine’ strokes with 133. His total pared a stroke off the course record for 368 holes at the Memphis Country club while his 18-hole 66 on the first round equalled the course record. Only important players eliminated were Profesisonal Al Espinosa, from Akron, O., and State Senior Champion Robert A. Stranahan from ‘Toledo, O. Espinosa, who lost a playoff for the National open title to Bobby Jones in 1929, turned in 151 while Stranahan failed to win one of the 11 berths among a field of 48. Jones, already . automatically qualified, played at Atlanta “just for practice” and shot 140, only eight strokes off the day's best tally. Among the more prominent players who qualified were P. Hal Sims, the bridge expert, and T. Suffern Tailer. Sims registered a 78-77 for 155 while Tailer, now in the army, turned in an 81-84 for 165. Both played at Long Beach, N. Y. A single South American was among the qualifiers at Elizabeth, N. J. He was Carlos Bracht af Buenos Aires, who carded 72-77 for an 150 total.

Hole-in-One

Tom Whiteway, Cleveland amateur, registered the day’s lone hole-in-one during the course of compiling a 149, the highest score among that district's seven qualifilers. He made the shot on the 110-yard 16th hole during the morning round at the Shaker Heights Country club.

St. Clair Country club, Belleville, Ill, and brother of the St. Louis Cardinals’ centerfielder, Terry Moore, turned in the lowest score among the eight qualifiers in the St. Louis area with 145. Chicago had thy largest field with 135 players comreting for the 40 berths. Frank Perpich of Chicago turned in the lowest score for this group with a 144.

Ken Kennedy of Hercules, Pa., who was the last of 12 qualifiers in his section.

PITTSBURGH, May 26 (U. P.).— Lew Jenkins, the former lightweight champion form Sweetwater, Tex. was knocked out by Fritzie Zivic, former welterweight champion; in the final round of their scheduled 10-round bout at Forbes field last night before a crowd estimated at 13,000. Zivic weighed 144, Jenkins 138. Referee Ernie Sesto refused to allow Jenkins to come out for the 10th round because of a cut over his left eye. Zivic won seven rounds and had Jenkins on the floor for a cne-count in the eighth. Four times Jenkins slipped and fell during the army-navy relief fund bout.
