YOUNG DRIVERS GIVEN WARNING
Navy Official Tells 35 Traffic Law Violators To ‘Wake Up.’
Thirty-five juvenile traffic law violators were warned yesterday by Lieut. Leland Blanchard, of the U. 8S. navy, that they must “wake up” to the fact that their country is at war. He said their traffic records ‘showed they were not faking their country’s plight seriously. “Y would think you would be ashamed to face the boys who fought, for you at the front when you are speeding around in cars endangering the lives of others,” ‘ Lieut. Blanchard said. He spoke to the traffic offenders . after they had been tried in court : before Judge Wilfred Bradshaw.

DEATH VERDICT MINUTES LATE
Jury Finds Accused Man Already Slain by Nephew | Of Murdered Man.
HARLAN, Ky. May 22 (U. P.)~— Disappointed by one jury and unwilling to take a chance with a second, Jack Heaton, 26, approached the defendant from behind and fired a bullet into his brain. The scene was in the Harlan
county courtroom. It was jammed with 300 persons watching the sec- | ond trial of Manzo Shepherd, 24, charged with murdering Jee Christian, Heaton’s uncle. The pistol shot occasioned little surprise. The spectators pushed forward a little, craned their necks. “Order in the courtroom,” said Judge James S. Forrester, rapping the bench with his gavel. The dying defendant slumped in a chair. His slayer was seized.
Jury Keeps Deliberating
Heaton chose the moment when the jury was filing out of the room, having been charged by Judge, Forrester. It heard the sho’ but] a bailiff hastily closed a door behind the last man in the line and it had no idea who had fired it or at whom. Therefore, entirely ignorant that its proceedings were on the academic side, it deliberated over the evidence, took a poll, and found itseif agreed that Shepherd was guilty of murder in the first degree, meaning a mandatory death sentence. But Shepherd had died in his) chair at counsel table when it returned, 20 minutes later, to report.

Standard Official Claims Prospective Output | Can Be Doubled. |
NEW YORK, May 22 (U. P.)—A|
method for increasing production ot aviation gasoline and. obtaining enough raw material to nearly double the prospective output of syn-| thetic rubber was announced today | by the Standard Oil Co. of New
W. S. Farish, president of the company, said the improved method would increase by two and a half to three times the production of butadiene, chief ingredient of synthetic rubber, or produce 15 per cent more high octane gasoline. Present plans call for production of 800,000 long tons of synthetic rubber annually. ‘The new method, Mr. PFarish said, would produce about 640,000 additional tons, making a total annual production of 1,440,000 tons, or about twice as much as the national consumption of natural rubber last year.
More High Octane Fuel
Mr. Farish said the new method averted the possibility that production of large quantities of butadiene would reduce production of aviation Contrarily, he said, it produces an improvised quality of pase stock for high octane fuel. It will be used commercially for the first time about July 1, in a plant designed to produce 100-oc-tane gasoline. It will: turn out the | expected amount of gasoline plus) enough butadiene to make 15,000 to 17,000 tons of ‘synthetic rubber an- | unally, he said. Thirty-three similar plants are either under construction or have been authorized under a $120,000,-
000 program. .
RIGID WAGE FREEZING OPPOSED BY A. F. L.
WASHINGTON, May 22 (U. PJ). ~The American Federation of Labor declared today that it is unqualifiedly opposed to rigid wage freezing. The federation’s monthly survey indorsed administration efforts to keep down prices and living costs, but asserted that “this does not call for a ceiling on wages.” The statement following a suggestion by Chairman William H. Davis of the war labor board that a ceiling be placed on wages. Mr. Davis suggested that it might be advisable to place a ceiling of $25 or more on wages and require gov ernment permission before raises could be given above the ceiling. The A. F. of L. said an average weekly wage of $44 is necessary: to maintain a family of five in “health and decency,” a weekly wage of $29.92 would provide a bare subsistence. :
