SCOUT TROOP 83 PILING UP SCRAP

Less Than 1000 Pounds From Goal Set to Aid Fighting Men.

“Twenty-five Tons for MacArthur’s Guns” and “Double 10 for the Fighting Men.” Boy Scout troop.83, sponsored by the Hayward-Barcus post 55, American Legion, is still not satisfied with its work of collecting scrap for national defense, although it is less than a 1000 pounds from its goal of gathering “Double 10 for the Fighting Men”—twenty tons. The boys have raised their total to 50,000 pounds in order to reach their new goal of 25 tons for the hero of Bataan.

Money to Buy Uniforms

The troop almost went over the top on its “double 10” when Vonnegut & Bohn, architects in the Indiana Trust Bldg. cleared their files of more than 1200 pounds of old catalogs, blueprints and specifications. : A grand total of 39,037 pounds of waste material has been collected and has placed in the treasury of the troop’s parent council $212. The “money will be used to pay for scout “uniforms and merit badges. Plan Overnight Hike Working hard to back up the men at the front has won for the troop its. first overnight hike of the year, June 20 and 21. On this hike each scout will be required to bring one pound of sugar as a part of his cost. The reason—there is no sugar in the troop’s commissary. Transportation will be furnished by Delbert O. Wilmeth, chairman; Paul Catterson, Howard Sutherland, Claude McLean, John Smead, -Earl Riddinger, Jean S. Boyle and Frank Y. Hardy, commander of Hayward-Barcus post. Future hikes will depend on government rationing.

Polly Wants His | Sugar—Gets It

ADRIAN, Mich, May 22 (U. P.).—The Lenawee county rationing board relented today and issued a sugar ration card to “Polly - Johnston, age 40, height one foot, weight 4 pounds, green eyes and yellow hair.” The special ration of one pound of sugar a month was made on application of Mrs. Amelia Johnston who reported that her pet parrot, “Polly” can raise an earpiercing howl if there isn’t sugar in the coffee he demands at each meal.

SAYS WEAK MINDED PROP CIVILIZATION

BOSTON, May 22 (U. P.)—Dr. Leo Kanner, associate professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins university, said last night that ‘“our culture would collapse in a month” if the feeble-minded were eliminated. ? They do the menial “dirty work,” freeing the more intelligent for tasks that require greater creative ability, he told the closing session of the American Psychiatric association’s 98th meeting. He said Adolf Hitler “has in a few years brought infinitely more disaster and suffering to the world than have all the innumerable mental defectives of all countries and generations combined.” Dr. Kanner said education and vocational opportunities must be provided for the feeble-minded, and he attacked those who advocate mercy killing. “Does anyone really think that the German nation is in any way improved, ennobled, made more civilized by inflicting what they cynically choose to call mercy deaths on the feeble-minded?” he asked.
